Xykon charmed the MitD to kill Redcloak should he ever betray him. I believe the specific instructions were ‘eat him and spit out the phylactery’ or somesuch.
So it’s not like he’s charmed to be anybody’s friend or whatever.
How do we know the spell worked?
We know that it had an effect on him because his eyes went all swirly.
Doesn’t charm have a reasonable duration? I mean it can be measured in days but the monster would have to be continually recharmed for the effect to continue on this long. I’m more inclined to treat that as a “Xykon didn’t trust Redcloak then” thing than a long term plot element.

I just want to say that this thread is greatly improving my reading of OOTS. You guys discussing the things makes me notice so many details that otherwise would’ve gone straight over my head.
I agree. If the “Xykon had charmed the creature” aspect is going to become a long-running plot element, Rich would be wise (and he is!) to introduce it. He’s always said that the prequel books aren’t necessary for the plot, so I highly doubt that this decades-old plot point has anything to do with today … yet. If it looks as if it might come up, we’ll have plenty of warning.

Allow me to join in on the confusion. If Fish hadn’t mentioned OOTS in his post, I’d have assumed he meant to post it in another thread. I’m going to the Giraffe board just to see what the heck he’s talking about.
And then immediately went back to non-swirly the very next panel. That looks to me like a Slippery Mind-type effect, possibly due to the Monster’s epic level forgetfulness.
Looking at his posting history AND what Fish is saying at the Giraffe board, it’s a reference to Fish being warned over in the “Texas Cop Tasers Granny” thread. Fish apparently just wants to discuss OOTS over there, in general irritation over the mods here. He has both a Pit thread and an OOTS thread there.

Well, no. It is certainly permissible to call someone on his shit. What is NOT permissible is to call the person “shit.” The distinction is perhaps a fine one, but nonetheless an important one.

It must be extra galling to V that she was still magically held when she was saved. Twice in the fight she was completely helpless and had to be saved by someone else. Hopefuly she will take Xykons words to heart and earn her future skills and abilities the long, difficult way.
