So where does basic D&D fit into that? Do they use the rules cyclopedia on another continent?
And what about the external compatible stuff? Is there a city state with an invincible overlord out there somewhere?

It’s her father that was a first-edition thief. And the dirt farmers they rescued from ogres were original D&D, not Advanced.
I just thought of something in 666. Shouldn’t Haley be surprised when she learns that Belkar killed the Oracle? She was so pissed off the first time, she was going to leave him to die. But forgets it. When she learns about it now she doesn’t act surprised or pissed.
When she finds out that his “sickness” is the activated Mark, she deduces that he must have killed someone at the Oracle’s place. The fact that it was the Oracle himself probably isn’t much of a surprise.
She was pissed when it happened, because she needed the oracle to resurrect Roy (at least she thought he could) and Belkar killed him. Now that they don’t need him any more, it’s no big deal. At the moment Belkar is on the behaving himself, and thus more of an asset than a liability.
I noticed that. Haley also seemed to take learning about Belkar’s imminent death pretty casually and she doesn’t ask Roy what his plan is that will defeat Xykon in seven weeks. So my guess is that there have been some other conversations between 665 and 666. They already know what’s happened and now they’re just discussing it separately from the others. This could be a hopeful sign that Roy now considers Haley as more of a co-leader for the group.
I just read an interesting theory on the OOTS forum. The poster there speculated that the Oracle simply lied about Belkar’s death. The basic idea is that while the Oracle knows everything that’s going to happen in the future, he’s not under any compulsion to be truthful about it. And knowing everything that’s going to happen, the Oracle foresaw the Snarl destroying reality (including the Oracle himself). Except that there was one thin chain of events that would prevent this. And this was initiated by the Order thinking that Belkar is going to die. So while Roy thinks the Oracle slipped up by forgetting to erase his memory, it was intentional.
I think he always considered her co-leader. The problem was that *she *didn’t.
Actually, in * Origin [/i[, she promotes herself to second-in-command. So she probably did. I think Haley’s reaction to the revelation about Belkar and the Oracle is tempered by the fact that it’s now Roy’s Problem (and the Oracle got better).
Considering the Oracle went glowy with a god appearing behind her I doubt it. If she’s speaking ex cathedria I think we can assume the Oracle is infallible.
She wanted the power, but she never had the responsibilities until Roy’s death. I think one point of the strip was to show how much her time in Occupied Azure City and subsequently matured her.
The god could easily have lied. It’s not as if gods in D&D are necessarily truthful beings.
OMG, no one here has linked to the fabulous #667 yet?
Vaarsuvius and Durkon are friends again! Yay Durkon for being so kindly and wise (and surprisingly nonjudgmental for a change), and most of all, yay Vaarsuvius for showing humility and guilt and sadness and honesty … up to a point, that is. And that final panel with the IFCC and one particularly irate caller was total WIN. Also: cute new 'do for V. I’m still dying to see a convo between Vaarsuvius and Elan about Kubata, but that may be postponed entirely, I fear.
Heh. Ms Tiamat is ready to rip someone five new assholes, I’m guessing.
I didn’t know breath attacks worked through telephones.
Oh, and they were counting the time for each soul rather than the total splice time for each of them…
So. . .
V owes 44 minutes and 13 seconds, total. Now how is it possible to take over the world in that amount of time? Hmmmm.
I wasn’t expecting an update so soon. Yay, Rich!
I wonder if Tiamat should’ve been calling in on line 7 rather than 8.
She’s expressing PRIMAL rage, not PRIME, duh.
Someone from the prime material plane is on line seven.
Aaaand… things look to be getting interesting for V. The “may you live in interesting times” sort of interesting.
V admitting s/he was wrong? What’s next, the Snarl apologizing to the gods and making friends with everyone?
