Australian dopers - I want to buy a DVD of “The Empire strikes back” for my nephew who lives in Brisbane. Where can I get the best but also reliable deal?
Bonus question - Since I’m at it, I may as well get him good and hooked. I also want to buy him the book ‘Heir to the Empire’ by Timothy Zahn. What site is good for buying books?
Because we in Australia have a completely different internet to the rest of the world! You have to use a special password and all.
FFS, especially for shit like books just buy it somewhere you’d normally buy shit online. Most places ship to Australia these days. You won’t be saving any money buy trying to buy “locally” because the taxes and “Just coz we can” markup eat any savings there may possibly in shipping - which frequently isn’t free even from local retailers.
And with regards to the DVD, just make sure he’s got a multi-region player and buy it from fucking Amazon or something.
For DVDs, try EzyDVD.
For books: Amazon or The Book Depository. If you’re in a hurry, Abbeys or its F&SF specialist subsidiary Galaxy Bookshop.
booko will find you the cheapest delivered-to-Australia price from anywhere in the world. I always use it. Mind you 90% of the time the answer is The Book Depository. The site factors in all the postage costs. BD books usually arrive in under 10 days - postage is free.
Thanks for being so helpful…mate.
Thank you. The ezydvd place did come up in a google search, but didn’t have the dvd.
Booko seems promising. Thanks a lot!
It’s worth looking at JB Hi-Fi online for DVDs as well. They’re usually very cheap with good postage pricing.
Amazingly, the Star Wars films appear to only be available on Blu-ray, however.
All the good recommendations have been thrown at you already.
For books - I would definitely go to an international site look the Book Depository. If you really want to use a local chain for some reason, possible go with Dymocks. But due to the ridiculous parallel import restriction on books in Australia you can often (usually) get a book from overseas and posted here cheaper then going into a local retailer for it.
DVD’s aren’t so bad price difference wise. The biggest local retailer is JB HiFi as mentioned above. If you order from an O/S supplier try and get the proper region. Sierra’s other assholery aside the comment about asking if he has a multi-region player is worth checking out.
For that DVD, try here.

Sanity is usually good, I wander in there but haven’t tried their online store before. http://www.sanity.com.au/
Books, no clues sorry
And if he doesn’t then your answer was useless and insulting.
Thank you all!
The DVD warehouse was the only place that had the Empire Strikes Back as a stand alone title, but unfortunately I’d already gone ahead and made the purchase by then on JB. The book depository is a really interesting site that I had no clue about. Free international delivery? That’s very cool.
If you want a good book store tryBooktopia. They have been excellent with all my orders from them.
(BTW- that is Sierra Indigo- she’s like that with everyone )
To the OP: You may be aware of this, and when it was mentioned in this thread, you just glossed over it, but the region codes may be a bigger problem than the shipping situation. Getting a DVD from the USA and trying to play it in Aussie Land might not work if you don’t have a region-free player. I suggest you bone up on this to be sure your nephew isn’t disappointed.
Is this still a problem? (I’m genuinely not aware). I thought most these days were universal or the manufacturers were able to provide codes to enable them to play DVD’s from another region.
In saying that, I haven’t bought an overseas DVD for years.
well you can google for the codes…
type in player model, then region free code.
