Oregon Gay Rights Protections Now before the Senate

Those interested in following the voting can go to Basic Rights Oregon - gay rights, civil rights, gay marriage, lesbian, glbt which is a live blog. It does not appear to refresh automatically.

Well, as of 1105 it looks like it passed–on to Kulongoski to be signed. Good job, Oregon!

The governor has said that he’ll sign it. The opposition has really shown its hand–these are the folks who told Oregonians to vote against gay marriage because that still left civil unions open. Now they’re opposing civil unions. Much of their testimony on both SB2 and HB2007 is inaccurate and demonstrates some pretty shocking bias–ironically, just more evidence of why these bills are needed.

I hear ya–the whole Measure 36 thing just disgusted me beyond belief. I still get pissed off every time I see one of those One Man/One Woman* bumper stickers on a car (usually right next to the “W” sticker!) My daughter and her fiance are holding off getting married because they want a civil union instead, and my SO of 20 years (though we’ve never made it legal) and I have actually entertained the idea of getting hitched in a CU as well. I think it behooves straight persons of liberal bent to tell the fundie fuckers as clearly as possible that they don’t own this state…

*I entertained the notion of making my own sticker reading “One Stupid Fuck/One Obnoxious Bitch” during the election but wiser heads prevailed… :stuck_out_tongue:

For those of us too lazy to do our own homework, what are the bills in question?

Oregon senate bill 2. From what I can find it looks like it adds sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes for non-discrimination in employment and housing.

House Bill 2007 establishes guidelines for same sex civil unions.

Senate Bill 2 prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender and sexual orientation and defines exactly what’s included in those prohibitions.
