Oreo Beer

Yup.

so, bottled yet?

Bottled it today. I got lazy, so it spent the entire time in the primary. The beer got noticably darker as it sat. There was a significant amount of beer loss due to massive sedimentation and a weird top layer that I suspect was fat. It tastes like a stout, but maybe a bit thin. I added about 1/3 a cup of bottling sugar. From five gallons I only produced a case and a half of beer.

Now, not to be old fashioned, about what about trying to design a beer that tasted oreo-like? I’m thinking something with chocolate malt and a bit of residual sugar and a tad of vanilla extract added. How does Guinness get that thick creamy action, by the way?

Interesting experiment. I can testify from personal experience that Rogue Chocolare Stout is a mighty fine brew.

If that was what I wanted, that is what I would do. This was done more on a dare than anything. If you look at the ingredients, I actually did not rely on the Oreo’s for much. It’s a good thing too. From the behavior of the cookies I would guess very little chocolate flavor came from the cookies.

Nitrogen bubbles, through a nitro tap (in a bar) or a nitrogen-releasing widget (in the can or bottle). Nitrogen bubbles are much tinier than carbon dioxide bubbles, and impart a “creamy” mouthfeel to the beer.

Guinness without nitro (through a regular tap or in the pre-widget cans) is quite a different experience.

Ahhhh, that explains why bottled Guinness is so not-very-Guinnessy. You learn something new every day!

So, you’ve bottled, and it’s sat now for 2.5 weeks or so.

How does it taste?

On nitrogen… If I were to nitrogenate my cider (after dumping campden tablets to kill any residual fermentation) how weird would that be?

I saw that it’s possible to buy the Nitrogen pellets. I am intrigued by this idea.

I’m pretty sure I’ve heard “banana wine” used as a euphemism for semen. As in, “Aw, man, that sucks banana wine.”

I did not know that.

It tastes like a decent stout. As I mentioned, it’s a bit thin for a stout, but not bad. It is pretty chocolaty. Definitely not sweet, but not too alcoholic either. I’m waiting for my defense party in two weeks for the official unveiling.

Maybe you should have left the cream filling in.
