Oreos are as addictive as cocaine in lab rats...

… According to a new study.

I’m sure there’s a way to complete this post with an SNL Weekend Update style joke, but I can’t think of one. :stuck_out_tongue: Anyone?

Yeah but it hurts like hell to snort an Oreo.

The source link is in the CNN story and has this

I’m pretty sure these rats were junkies even before the study started. I think they need to do a better job of screening.

it’s the white stuff.

Hell, haven’t we all done that ourselves?

Shh; the DEA will want to add it to their list.

As a recovering addict, I knew it already.

Yep, I started off with Oreos thinking it was no big deal and that I could quite anytime. But before I knew it, I had worked my way up to DOUBLE stuffed Oreos. Often stuffing my fat little face, while crying and curled up in the fetal position in the corner of my room.

My nephew goes to the college that conducted the study. I thought of it as purely a liberal arts school and didn’t realize they had much in the way of hard sciences there.

When feeding cookies to rats counts as hard science, that’s a liberal arts school.

I don’t expect to use cocaine again, it’s not something I wish to pursue. OTOH, some oreos are sounding pretty good right now. Hm…

I’m trying to remember where I read it, and failing, but someone recently reported that for some of these addictive substances, the rats only fall into addiction quickly and reliably if they’re stuck in a cage with not much else to do. If they’re given a rich and social environment, the addictive substances aren’t as attractive.

When I was but a wee young 'un, they didn’t have Double Stufs. We had to take two Oreo’s, ‘unscrew’ them & make our own Double Stufs. Then they came out with Double Stuf’s. Of course we continued our tradition of taking two, ‘unscrewing’ & tossing the top cookie & jamming the rest together to make quadruple stufed!
Now those pushers have come out with Triple Double Oreos - three cookies & two layers of white creamy filling & Mega Stuf - even more filling than Double Stufs.

You can see where this is going, one Triple Double, coupled with two Mega Stufs equals a Dagwood sized cookie that you can barely get into your mouth, but if you do it leaves you not only curled up but twitching uncontrollably.

Hmmm, think I can a Mega-Triple combo deep fried?

BTW, I don’t know that the study proves anything except that rice cakes are horribly bland food. And no one need a college study to tell them that.

God I hate Oreo hangovers.

This isn’t news to anyone who knows the tremendous effort the big foodmakers put into engineering their products for maximum appeal. “Addiction” is probably too strong a word, but nearly every packaged food in the store is extensively engineered and tested to hit “bliss points” that make people crave them.

Poor Cookie Monster. Vindicated after all this time. Maybe now he can get the help he’s needed for so long.

Did they also run the test for oreos dipped in milk? Cuz, you know, oreos and milk.
