Origin of a Phrase: Matchstick Men

OK, we’ve all seen the previews by now. A matchstick man is a con artist, someone who uses lies and fraud to swindle another out of money or another valuable.

I’ve never heard of the phrase, and I would like to know where it comes from. Google hasn’t been helpful, so I turn here.
