Origin of homosexual stereotypes

I was curious as to the how and why homosexual stereotypes came to be. For example, how male homosexuals are usually considered “flaming” homosexuals in regards that they are supposed to be a feminine, talk in high voices, have mustaches and are usually drag queens. For females how they have mullets, manly demeanor, and are militant.

Just about all of the homosexuals that I know personally do not fit this stereotype, and the few that do fit the stereotype are not a really tight fit at all. So is this just another case of xenophobia or something else?

(And if I get flamed, I understand. I was just curious.)

Origins are easy - people view gay men as wanting to be effeminate, and gay women as wanting to be masculine, so they assign them charicature-ish traits of them trying to emulate the opposite sex.

And I have said before and say again, stereotypes exist because sometimes they’re true, just in small doses and not all at once in the same person - I know gay men who lisp and lesbians who fix cars.
