I heard the song “Surrender” by Cheap Trick, and it’s somewhat different from the way I previously remember hearing it. Is their version a cover? If so, who is the original artist?

The lead guitarist Rick Nielsen wrote it. Perhaps you are confused between the “live at Budakon” version (kicks ass) and the sudio version (too tame)
Maybe it’s from the soundtrack of 'That ‘70’s Show’? I’m not a fan, but I know Cheap Trick does the theme, so maybe they did a version for the show.
