Original Golden Slumbers music?

I watched Sing recently and Jennifer Hudson’s version of Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight has been haunting me ever since. Wiki tells me Paul McCartney cribbed most of the words from a poem called Cradle Song written by a 15th century dramatist named Thomas Dekker which was set to music more than three hundred years later. Paul saw the sheet music but couldn’t read music, so he set the words (changed up a bit) to his own music.

So. . . what did the original music sound like? Is there a recording of it somewhere?

I have no clue. I recall hearing about the lyrics, but never chased down the music. But now you have me curious!

I never heard of the Beatles having anything to do with it. It was just a traditional English lullaby when I was young.

*Golden slumbers kiss your eyes,
Smiles awake you when you rise.
Sleep, pretty wantons, do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby,
Rock them, rock them, lullaby.

Care is heavy therefore sleep you.

You are care and care must keep you.
Sleep, pretty wantons, do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby,
Rock them, rock them, lullaby.*

Dekker
I can’t read music so have no ability to put down the tune I would have heard, but — having cringingly listened to the Beatles’ version — can say it is very different. The stresses would be more like:

Golden slumbers kiss your eyes,
Smiles awake you when you rise.

possibly this:

The Wiki article made it seem as if the poem was over 300 years old but the music was added last century.

Nice! Thanks.
