Original mother's day gifts

Any thoughts or ideas?

I got my mom one of those “cakes” from 1-800-flowers for her birthday last year. It is really cute. It comes in a cake box, looks like a cake, but is actually a bunch of flowers. She loved it and thought it was very original.

I did a similair thing. My mom had just moved and my older brother and I went halfsies and bought her this beautiful painting for the new house. . . and the painting had flowers in it.

I got my mother a Mother’s Day card, and so did my brothers and sisters. They all went in a pile. I put my card on the top to be opened first. Under that I put a card that said “Happy Mother’s Day Grandma”. All the other cards had yet to be opened, and she was giving all my brothers and sisters a really strange look. None of them were married at the time, but they were dating. It really was funny.

I went to http://www.art.com and found the sweetest print of some bears, lying down looking at a big white moon. They’ll mat and frame it and ship it for free. Can’t beat that with a stick!

Mom collects teddy bears, so this should be a hit.

Too bad she’s in Seattle and I’m in Iowa – it’s always nice to be there for the unwrapping.

Phobia that’s great!

I did something similar on April Fools day. My girlfriend smokes and my mom is always telling her to stop. That day, when she told her to stop, my girlfriend looked down sheepishly, then at me and said that now would probably be a good time. Then me and her exchanged awkward glances (I have to say we were Oscar material that day) as my mom became more and more suspicious, until finally asking me “Ok what’s going on? Your gonna have to tell me anyway so tell me now”.
Eventually we let it come out that my girlfriend was pregnant, ran with it for about 15 min., and came clean. Then all 3 of us did it to my sister.

Boy that was a good one. I should probably start a Great April Fools Day pranks and Ideas thread. Maybe later.

But now I need to hear some more mother’s day ideas. I’m completely a blank. Let’s see how creative you all can be.

Sea Monkeys!

“The perfect gift for every occasion”

Warm up your printer, and run off a set of 24 envelopes, and nice note cards with your mother’s address on them, put on stamps, and the salutation Dear Mom at the top of each note. Then give them to your brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles. That way mom gets mail, other than on mother’s day, and her birthday.

Tris

I’ve found that my mother appreciates deeds more than tangible gifts. I mean, she can buy anything she wants herself.

Some of the things I’ve done: planted the garden, painted the family room, made a large gourmet dinner. Now, I know you can’t do these things if you live far away, but they’re ideas, at least.

If you do want something tangible then a great gift is a nicely framed family photo (maybe one she’s forgotten existed), or photos of your ancestors, or the like.

Tris’s idea is great, too.

I was born on Mother’s Day, and still try to milk that when the two occasions fall on the same day…

Last year, my brother and I gave Mom a rock. We found it in our front yard, painted it, and put a bow on it. Cheapest gift in the world, but oddly enough, she liked it. We also painted our (and my boyfriend’s, and three of my brother’s friends’) hands and left the prints on a huge card for her. The card went over well. The paint all over the kitchen did not.

This year, my brother and I need to stay in her good graces, so we’ll probably shell out some cash get her a gift certificate for a massage, and also make a coupon book with notes promising to make dinner, wash her car, and what have you.

Eve Your a genius! Sea monkeys!!

Seriously! I’ve been sweating what I can do for mom thats unique. She’s got way too many of my watercolors, and I already added to her crystal collection both at Christmas and her birthday.

Now I can add a unique spin to this theme by getting her a crystal fishbowl AND a box of Sea Monkeys. I can’t wait to see her reaction (and my stepfather, who already believes me a total loon).

I’m dead serious. I’ll post her reaction here after Mom’s Day.
