Origins of kickball?

I just read in the Economist that the sport of kickball was created in the Czech Republic in 1922. Wikipedia says the same thing. But I have no independent evidence for this. I’d like to find out where this factoid comes from, and what the real story is regarding the origins of kickball.

No help, but by “Kickball” do they mean the game played on a baseball diamond with baseball style fielders and a pitcher who rolls the ball to a kicker who is called out if he is struck with the ball?

Seems rather odd that a sport so similar in style to baseball wasn’t invented here in the cow pastures and village greens of America or the rounders/cricket fields of England when Little Billy or Wee Tommy brought a ball too large to be hit with a stick.
