Orson Scott Card's new job

So it would stand to reason the constituents of North Carolina would be fine with OSC’s appointment?

Anything can be mocked, which wasn’t I believe the point of the thread. I thought the point of the thread was “this is going to be controversial.” My suspicion is “not very”, because it is a local appointed position. Since the argument being made is OSC is a “lunatic right winger” and that the North Carolina legislature is dominated by “lunatic right wingers” it would stand to reason all the “lunatic right winger” voters who put those legislators in power would not only be fine with but would expect their representatives to be appointing people like Card to appointed positions.

I imagine some large majority of the university community won’t be happy about it, but that only makes it a fairly low grade controversy. It isn’t like they appointed Jerry Falwell’s Zombie as University President (or chancellor or whatever title UNC uses.)

Those who watch Fox News will be happy. Those who watch UNC-TV generally won’t.

UNC-TV is only tangentially affiliated with the University System. It’s more like North Carolina’s PBS affiliated network. It surprises me to no end that Berger would put someone like Card on the Board as a “fuck you” to the viewers.

This.

Not sure why you feel so strongly about this, but NC legislature is so heavily Republican in large part due to redistricting (gerrymandering) in 2011.

 I don’t remember expressing my feelings on this issue. Mainly I don’t have any, like I said, I liken this to finding out someone controversial is on the local public utility board or something. The board of directors of a public broadcast channel isn’t exactly a high profile or particularly powerful position–probably even within the station itself, which is probably ran by a merit-based management staff.

Since as usual, he was nowhere near the fuckups he caused, that is true; but since they wouldn’t have been there were it not his brainwave — best avoid a planner who bases a campaign on one of his own early novels: they tend to be wishful thinking — and even neither Kitchener nor Fisher were enthusiastic for a pair of vicious bastards usually aggressive, it’s difficult to see who else should be ultimately blamed.

Except it’s not just one channel. UNC-TV is a network of (I think) 16 PBS Stations throughout the state. UNC-TV is a major media source for a lot of people in the state. This is not a minor position. This is not an overly major one, either. What this is is a way for Phil Berger to give the finger to the viewership of PBS in North Carolina.

I didn’t realize it was a network of stations…although as I said I still don’t think this is quite high profile enough to be a real controversy. Maybe I’m mistaken and it will become “the next big outrage”, I have been wrong (extremely) about what people throw tantrums about in the past.

I also find it strange PBS viewers are only of one political persuasion in the minds of many. I’m a regular PBS viewer and I’m as conservative a poster as you typically see on these forums.

UNC TV gets some state funding but it’s not the bulk of their budget.

For example the state funded 100% of their cost to convert to HDTV.

I worked their fundraiser back in the spring. The first night was during the last episode of Downton Abbey. They interrupted the show to ask for donations. That was a really bad idea, we had people calling up asking to stop their monthly donations they were so upset about the show being interupted!

Yeah - whoever came up with the idea of interrupting the shows during Festival needs to be shot. At least they didn’t interrupt Nova.

I see. Well, thanks for letting us know that your general ignorance of the situation won’t preclude your offering supercilious insults to people who do understand it. Now that you’ve clarified, bye bye!

I see someone (you) being childish here, but I don’t see where I’ve insulted anyone.

Correct, I was not aware UNC-TV was a small network of public broadcast stations, but once I was informed on that it did not materially change my outlook.

Reasons:

  1. It’s still a fairly small potatoes organization. If this guy was appointed to the Board of Regents (or whatever) of a major institution like UNC itself I can see the outrage, both because of OSC’s politics and his lack of qualifications to hold such a post.

  2. The people most likely to be outraged would be residents of North Carolina. Specifically residents of North Carolina who watch UNC-TV and would dislike Card. That is a smaller number than “all residents of North Carolina” or “all residents of North Carolina who watch UNC-TV.”

  3. The fact that it’s a network of stations actually means it’s going to have a coverage area well outside of Chapel Hill, where opposition to someone like Card would be highest. That fact suggests many of the viewers will be in the rest of North Carolina, which is considerably more conservative than Chapel Hill.

  4. An organization with a governing board operates day to day under the purview of an executive leadership team. The governing board has little day to day power, and the actual power they do wield has to be exercise through the form of votes of the whole board. For that reason unless the rest of the board goes along with him, OSC won’t directly be able to set policy or necessarily do much of anything on the board of UNC-TV. Even among the portion of the population likely to be outraged, some will not be outraged because of the unimportant nature of the post.

 I’m sure you don’t. Nevertheless, sentences like these are why using your irony meter on the Internet voids its warranty.

Best sentence ever.

Even then, you’re well on this side of sanity compared to OSC. Your average PBS station doesn’t broadcast his type of looniness. There are conservative commentators on their shows, but they usually aren’t of the “Obama is obviously becoming a dictator tomorrow” variety.
