Orthodox Catholic Planned Community in Florida

I was brung up Catholic, and I think I’d have had a hard time living in this town, even at my most orthodox. All college students urged to become priests and nuns? Masses said every hour on the hour?

It might look good to Monaghan on paper, but I’ll bet that the reality of his town won’t measure up to his dream. A community of real people living there is going to compromise this unified vision.

I approve of communities like this - it segregates the type of people I dislike into easily-avoided areas.

However - it won’t remain Catholic for long. It will only be a matter of time before a homeowner dies and leaves her property to her flamingly homosexual son, or something similar.

Being raised catholic, I’ve never heard of the Orthodox Catholics. I just figured some were more uptight than others.
However, if I lived in the area, I would definately put up a liquor store and a bingo parlor right across the street from this place.
Cause the two things catholics can do without guilt is drink and gamble. A nun told me that.

Orthodox as in G. K. Chesterton’s Orthodoxy, meaning those Catholics who wholeheartedly toe the line drawn by the Vatican.

It is in Florida. You’ll make more money on dog racing (and jai alai with some back room action).

I always wanted to take an abandoned church and use the building for a small store. It looks like I found the perfect location for

Mr. Goob’s * Guns & Ammo, Adult Novelties, Fireworks and Liquor Emporium*

In my county (Which abuts collier county, the site of the future Ave Maria), the “Lamb of God Church” was converted to Andre’s Steak House. As a planner I was against this as I believe firmly in the separation of church and steak. I think it has since been reconverted to another church. I guess there’s more money in fleecing the flock than cooking it.

But seriously, I imagine that it’s perfectly legal for the church to decide what can be done in establishments that it owns. But it might be somewhat unconstitutional for them to dictate morality for all the other businesses. It sounds like the big pizza man is literally trying to create a town where the church IS the state.

Now wasn’t it nice that those developers donated the land for the campus? When Florida Gulf Coast Univeristy was founded up here in Lee County, a developer donated all the land for it as well. Of course, he still owned all the land around it, driving up the price of said land and reaping vast profits from the subsequent development. But that was just a coincidence. I’m sure he didn’t realize what would happen to the price of the donut once he sold the hole. I would not be surprised if Ave Maria is in the same boat.

Introibo ad altare Dei - Ad Deum qui laetificat juventutem meum etc

Bring back the proper, Tridentine Mass in Latin!

This mob are your men.

Can they DO that? Would you have to be Catholic to live there? Would they kick any Protestants or less anal Catholics out?

I think people might well self-select for this town. Less orthodox/traditionalist Catholics might not be interested in relocating or purchasing property there.

We have planned a Jewish community here in Mason, Ohio. I only know this because there’s a huge sign that says “Planned Jewish community” or something to that effect.

I doubt that legally they can keep non-Jews out, however I’m trying to imagine who would want to live there and spoil their party (which you just know would be rockin’) aside from maybe a reality t.v. show.

Ah, yes, but the First Amen-ment only applies to the government, not private enterprises.
