Thanks, HelloKitty and FriarTed. I guess I should have looked it up myself. I was more caught up in the *deja vuishness * of it than actually wondering what else she might have hosted.
None of those directors have had their films win the Foreign Language award, and in most of their cases, their films hadn’t even been submitted by their home country to compete (since Japan, Germany, and France have tons of stiff internal competition).
The thing I thought was annoying is that they were giggling in between each nominee.
I thought it was interesting that both Pixar (Lfited) and Disney (The Little Matchgirl) lost out to an independent filmmaker (The Danish Poet) in the Animated Short category. I’m glad to see that indie animators are still thriving. (Now that I think about it, Pixar hasn’t won a shorts Oscar since For the Birds.)
Peter O’Toole is a year younger than William Shatner. That must have been some life he led.
The Oscars run as long as they do for one simple reason: ABC can sell more commercials in a four-hour telecast than it can in a two-hour telecast. And that extra money goes to AMPAS. The Oscars are AMPAS’ big revenue source.
Are the Oscars about acknowledging the people who really make the movies work? Of course not. Two words: technical Oscars. The Oscars that are handed out during the main telecast are in categories that correlate perfectly to the most powerful unions in Hollywood. That’s the only reason they are there and you can be absolutely sure that if ABC could get away with it you wouldn’t see them.
The only real question is one that’s endemic to all live events: since they know that the Oscars (and the Super Bowl and the World Series, etc.) will run longer why in this world of tivo do they still maintain the fiction that the show will last only three hours, forcing everybody to fiddle with their machines to capture the extra hour?
This was the first Oscar year in which I really don’t have a major complaint. It’s almost… disorienting.
Ah yes, the all-powerful “Brotherhood of Live Action Short Filmmakers”, and you don’t even want to mess with the “Coalition of Documentary Teamsters and Non-Fiction Guild” thugs.
Regarding Peter O’Toole:
From Wiki:
Documentary filmmakers are not only eligible for the Directors Guild, but Michael Aptad is its president.
I’ve always hated that women wear their hair up whilst in eveningwear. It almost never improves someone’s attractiveness when they’re trying to look their most attractive.
We are in an age of boring long, straight hair.
It’s the 60s all over again … but without the excitement!
First of all, I like Celine Dion and I enjoyed hearing her. I won’t defend her any more than that because I spent the entire night defending her when I was watching the show with my friends. Frankly, I’m tired.
I know I’m in a massive minority here but I thought it was a touch low class that they had Spielberg, Lucas, and Coppola hand out the best director award. I mean, I knew Scorsese was getting it when the editor won but having those three come out took out all of the guesswork. I guess it’s just that when I saw the three guys come out, it’s almost as if the other four directors fell of the face of the earth and I just think that is unfair. I understand Scorsese is Scorsese (who I think is a bit overrated…but he is good I will grant you) but still, Frears, Inarritu, Eastwood (who I hoped would win), and Greengrass all did a great job and deserved to be treated as such.
My favorite part is watching the excitement on the faces of the below the line people when they win awards. It’d be a real shame, not to mention offensive, to get rid of that part of the broadcast.
Eddie Murphy taking off was awful. When people like Peter O’Toole and Kate Winslet or in past years Scorsese can act dignified when they don’t win, so can you. Get over yourself.
