Oscar Nominations Trivia Question

If Sofia Coppola wins the Best Director Oscar this year, the Coppolas will be the second string of three-generation Academy Award Winners: her father, Francis Ford Coppola won Best Director for The Godfather, Part II; three Best Writng Oscars for The Godfather, Part II, The Conversation, and Patton; and one Oscar as producer of the Best Picture for The Godfather, Part II. Her grandfather, Carmine Coppola, won the Oscar for the Best Musical score for The Godfather, Part II.

Not my question, but I’ll pose it anyways so those of you who would like to jump in with the correct answer can bump this thread  :

Who was the other three-generation Oscar winning family?

Here’s my question, though:

Just the fact that she has been nominated makes the Coppolas a three-generation Oscar Nominated family.

Have there been any others (aside from the other winners above?)

This info is not as easily obtained, so I’m hoping if any others do exist someone out there will know.

For that matter, I assume that if she wins, this will be the only father-offspring winning Best Director pair? And if she doesn’t win, are they the only such pair ever nominated? (It’s certainly the only Father-Daughter pair, as only two other women have ever been nominated for Best Director, but am I correct in assuming that no father-son combination has ever been both nominated for Best director)?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Walter, John and Anjelica Huston.

Damn YOU!
I knew it.
But what were they for?
AHA!:
Walter Huston was directed to an Oscar by John Huston in The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre

Anjelica Huston was directed by John Huston to an Oscar in Prizzi’s Honor.

John won Best Director for The Treasure.

Ha!

The closest example previous to Sofia’s inclusion would be George Stevens (2-time Director winner) and his son, GS Jr., who was nominated for producing a Documentary short in 1962.

As for Oscar legacies, here are the Big 3 (families with at least 4 nominated members).

The Newmans: 11 Oscars, 79 Nominations
Alfred - 9 Oscars, 45 nominations
brother Lionel – 1 Oscar, 11 nominations
son Thomas – 0 Oscars, 6 nominations
son David – 0 Oscars, 1 nomination
nephew Randy – 1 Oscar, 16 nominations

The Coppolas: - 7 Oscars, 25 nominations
Francis – 5 Oscars, 14 nominations
father Carmine – 1 Oscar, 2 nominations
sister Talia Shire – 0 Oscars, 2 nominations
daughter Sofia – 0 Oscars (yet), 3 nominations
nephew Nicolas Cage – 1 Oscar, 2 nominations
brother-in-law Bill Neil – 0 Oscars, 1 nomination
(ex-) son-in-law Spike Jonze – 0 Oscars, 1 nomination

The Hustons: - 4 Oscars, 23 nominations
John – 2 Oscars, 15 nominations
father Walter – 1 Oscar, 4 nominations
daughter Anjelica – 1 Oscar, 3 nominations
son Tony – 0 Oscars, 1 nomination

The Conversation did not win any Oscars. FFC’s 3rd writing Oscar was for the first Godfather.

Let’s not forget the Fondas, while we’re at it:

Henry: 1 Oscar, 1 Oscar nomination, 2 Golden Globes, 1 GG nomination, 2 Emmy nominations
Peter: 2 Oscar nominations, 2 Golden Globes, 2 GG nominations, 1 Emmy nomination
Jane: 2 Oscars, 5 Oscar nominations, 6 Golden Globes, 6 GG nominations, 1 Emmy, 1 Emmy nomination
Bridget: 2 Golden Globe nominations, 1 Emmy nomination
Troy Garrity (son of Jane and Tom Hayden): 1 Golden Globe nomination

Totals:
Oscars: 3. Nominations: 8
GG: 10. Nominations: 12.
Emmys: 1. nominations: 5.

The kids, Bridget and Troy, have yet to win a major award but they’re still relatively young.

** ArchiveGuy**, thanks for correcting my mistake. I thought it seemed weird as I typed in The Conversation, but apparently going back and forth from the IMDB window and the StraightDope window my eyes kept transposing rows from the “Nominated” row of the two Conversation Oscars and the “Won” row of Oscars for Godfather Part 2 the same year. Sorry.

Thanks for the treasure trove of info. I went to look up the various accomplishments on IMDB to see which Newmans won what (aside from Alfred and Randy whom I was familiar with) and I seem to have found another relative left off your list:

Emil Newman, another brother of Alfred Newman, was nominated for a Best Musical Score Oscar for 1941’s Sun Valley Serenade.

Their brother Lionel Newman won for Best Musical Score for 1969’s Hello, Dolly!

I was confused at first because on his biography page on IMDB, the info about “brother Lionel” is in a separate paragraph than his other 5 relatives they have links for, and is thus easy to overlook.

And yes, Bryan Ekers, how could we forget the Fondas? I guess the most likely chance for the next three-generation Oscar nominated family would be they, should Bridget get nominated. Could happen.

Are there any others we are leaving out, perhaps a famous father whose son was nominated for a less-prestigious Oscar who had a son or daughter likewise nominated but (relatively) obscure? The Academy site (www.oscars.org) apparently is working on compiling a searchable database, but for now they have put up a set of statistics on each category, mostly by number of nominations and wins. As of yet they don’t have a set of stats of relatives who were nominated, so I can’t search any further (on their site easily, that is).

On a somewhat related note, I suppose old Francis Ford Coppola is involved with a number of trivia questions this year, as The Lord of the Rings becomes the second set of a series of three movies (is there a word for that?) to all be nominated for Best Picture, after The Godfather, series, of course.

I was thinking if there were any other sets of films that were so nominated in any other categories, but on further reflection I think some series of films (like perhaps the James Bond series) must have had at least some nominations for three or more of those films. I wonder if more than three Bond films have gotten nominations for Best Song or Effects or something, and what the most films of a “series” that have been nominated is?

For the record, Lord of the Rings beats out The Godfather series with 30 total nominations to the Godfather’s 28. The three Godfather films won a total of 9 Oscars, and the first two Rings have won a total of 6. I’d be very surprised if LotR:RotK doesn’t win at least four Oscars (out of its 11 nominations) to go ahead in wins, as well.

I’m just glad the AA aren’t political.

Archive Guy writes:

> The Coppolas: - 7 Oscars, 25 nominations
> Francis – 5 Oscars, 14 nominations
> father Carmine – 1 Oscar, 2 nominations
> sister Talia Shire – 0 Oscars, 2 nominations
> daughter Sofia – 0 Oscars (yet), 3 nominations
> nephew Nicolas Cage – 1 Oscar, 2 nominations
> brother-in-law Bill Neil – 0 Oscars, 1 nomination
> (ex-) son-in-law Spike Jonze – 0 Oscars, 1 nomination

Sofia Coppola and Spike Jonze are only separated. They’re not divorced yet. He hasn’t been nominated for an Oscar yet, but there’s also Jason Schwartzman, the son of Talia Shire, who was nominated for some other awards for Rushmore.

Just found out another father-son combination:

Arthur A. Ross was nominated for Best Original Screenplay in 1980 for Brubaker.

His son, Gary Ross, is nominated this year for Best Adapted Screenplay for Seabiscuit, as well as for producing Best Picture nominee Seabiscuit. He has been nominated before for Best Original Screenplay both for Dave in 1993 and fior Big in 1988.

Don’t know if he has any kids…

D’oh!

Another parent-child pairing in this year’s nominations (starting to make me think there may be quite a few from previous years):

Jim Sheridan is nominated for Best Original Screenplay for In America, along with his two daughters, also nominated for Best Original Screenplay for In America: Naomi Sheridan and Kirsten Sheridan.

Jim Sheridan has previous nominations for both Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for My Left Foot in 1988, and for Best Director, Producer for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay for In the Name of the Father in 1993.

Well, the OP only mentioned Oscars (heck, just about anybody can get a Golden Globe nod  ), plus there are tons of inter-Oscared families (Vincente/Judy/Liza, Warren/Shirley/Annette, etc.), which is why I was keeping it limited to families (extended or otherwise) of 4 or more members.

Oh, and Henry Fonda had 3 Oscar nominations, not one.

Good call on Emil, richard.

Another 4-fer: The Kanins: 2 Oscars, 7 Nominations
Garson & his wife Ruth Gordon: 0 Ocars, 3 shared Nominations
Ruth (by herself): 1 Oscar, 2 Nominations
brother Michael & his wife Fay: 0 Oscars, 1 shared Nomination
Michael (by himself): 1 Oscar, 1 Nomination

The Redgraves: 3 Oscars, 13 Nominations
Vanessa: 1 Oscar, 6 Nominations
father Michael: 0 Oscars, 1 Nomination
sister Lynn: 0 Oscars, 2 Nominations
husband Tony Richardson: 2 Oscars, 2 Nominations
son-in-law Liam Neeson: 0 Oscars, 1 Nomination
son-in-law Tim Bevan: 0 Oscars, 1 Nomination
