Del Toro and Shape of Water take both Director and Best Picture – no one-and-one splitting this year.
McDormand was her quirky and authentic self and that was good.

Loved that they showed the Best Picture envelope in the wings. “We will be opening the CORRECT envelope after this!”
I’m happy…I got five of the six big categories right…only missed on Sam Rockwell.
And then del Toro checking it to make sure on stage. ![]()
Note to self: do not have Gael Garcia Bernal sing your Oscar-nominated song. Excellent actor, terrible singer.
If I were to bet I would have put money on Oldman for best actor and Peele for screenplay. I got best picture right but I wasn’t nearly as confident. The rest I didn’t guess too well.
Kobe was the one that surprised me. I guess there are a lot of Laker fans at AMPAS.
I enjoyed it so much this year! The opening was clever, the monologue was not overly long but hit the “important points”. I was hoping for some Matt Damon shaming (Damon shamin’!) but since he wasn’t nominated, or even there, I guess it wouldn’t have made sense.
All of the songs were lackluster, to put it as kindly as possible. GGB really was a mess (a pretty, pretty one, but a mess nonetheless).
I mostly predicted the winners but this year I really liked just about everyone in everything so I wasn’t going to be disappointed or surprised in any case. I’ll admit I was pulling for Daniel Day-Lewis a little bit, if for no other reason I can’t remember what his real voice sounds like
At first glance I thought Frances McDormand was wearing camo
I do wish they wouldn’t show close ups of the nominees when the winner is called. I always avert my eyes.
Also, no more of the surprising the unwashed masses in their native habitat shtick. If those people were such Oscar fans, why weren’t they home watching it?
There was some Matt Damon shaming. After the military montage Kimmel apologized to veterans about having Matt Damon footage included. He also did his usual fake apology about running out of time for Matt Damon.
Now about the military montage/salute to veterans… did Wes Studi throw a little shade at the attendees and was it off script? Also anyone find a translation of the Cherokee he ended with?
I thought they did this before, one year, but it wasn’t a JetSki. Or am I thinking of the Emmys?
You mean the footage from the old ceremonies? I’m sure there were newsreel cameras recording them, if only for the celebrities. If you mean the “footage” of the modern celebrities, that was live, with a black & white filter and a “vintage movie film” filter applied to them. There’s a reason Oscars broadcasts tend to win a lot of Emmys (and it’s not just that Emmys broadcasts are not eligible for them).
That was the worst animated film of the nominees. If it had been made about someone who wasn’t a Laker, it wouldn’t even have been nominated. It just wasn’t that good thematically or technically. It was made because Kobe is upset no one gives him attention anymore.
More homerism from the Academy.
The envelope itself was clearly labeled “Best Picture”. I assume each of the envelopes was labeled as to the category. I don’t think the envelopes were labeled last year.
They were, but in very small print, and I don’t think on both sides.
Damn, that was hard to sit through but I did want to watch Gary Oldman get an Oscar so I persevered. I can certainly understand why the ratings are down 16% from last year. You can almost physically feel the contempt that Hollywood has for Joe Public.
Got a feeling now Lebron James is going to have to get into film production…
Meanwhile someone started walking away with Frances McDormand’s award at the afterparty, making it so she was clearly the major source of excitement in the whole event.
… which is nothing to the contempt Hollywood has shown for Jane Starlet!
Well, shoot, I missed it again. I haven’t seen the Oscars since they snubbed Star Wars, so this was my 40th anniversary! Contempt for Greg Ten-year-old!!! At first it was a grudge, but it’s dulled into just a habit at this point.
You’re right. And he already has 3 Emmys and 3 Tonys so he’s on the way to be a triple EGOT
Really? I thought a lot of it (the tribute to the troops, the visit to the movie theatre) showed just the opposite: that they are currying favor with the public rather than caring about more hardcore cinephiles.

Oh please. The visit to the movie theater was for laughs. It’s just the goofy kind of thing Kimmel does. Shooting hotdogs into the crowd with a hotdog gun is currying favor with the public? And they mentioned the troops but it was a tribute to war movies that won or were nominated for Oscars. If they were currying favor with veterans they wouldn’t have had Jane Fonda on stage a short time later. If that was their purpose it blew up in their face.
