Oscars (and Emmys)

Now, I know that they make more statuettes then are actually awarded, due to the varrying size of groups receiving the award in case of a win, and maybe a few spare ones.

In any case, once the awards are given, what happens to the spare ones ? Are they accounted for, or is it possible for some worker to sneak one out, and put it on the fireplace ?

IIRC, all Oscars are engraved with a serial number and all are accounted for. Oscar winners sign a form where they promise never to put their statuette up for sale; the number is how the Academy can check.

Just curious, but what happens if an actor refuses to sign the form?

Remember a few years back a whole lot of them were stolen and later recovered.

I remember reading years ago that friends of James Dean stole Frank Sinatra’s Oscar while at a perty at Sinatra’s. They gave it to Dean because he “deserved one” while they thought Sinatra didn’t.

No, the Oscar winners sign a form stating that should they wish to sell their Oscar, the Academy must be given the right of first refusal for one dollar. There have been a few instances where the heirs of Oscar winners (e.g. Beatrice Welles) have sought to sell Oscars only to have the Academy step in and block the sale. Some Hollywood people also buy Oscars awarded prior to the agreement and donate them back to the Academy, and sometimes the heirs donate the awards back as well (examples noted in above link).

Can’t they just save the statuettes for next year? It never changes.

Do the nominees for Oscars, Emmys and Tonys get a certificate or anything official that says they were nominated?

So at least they would have something to frame and put over the fireplace?
