Others here from snopes messageboard?

I know there are some others here who used to be on the (apparently now defunct) snopes messageboard/forum; but not everybody’s got the same username (though I’m using the same one). Also, I can’t assume that a familiar name is the same person, because a different person might have chosen a name here that somebody else chose on snopes.

Anybody want to stop in here and say hi, whether they recently came over or did so years ago?

A new Snopes message-board is in the works according to Snopes.

Meta.

Yup. That’s been up for over a month now; and the old boards have been shut down for over a month.

Maybe the Discourse boards will eventually happen; but it’s been an awfully long gap, and there hasn’t been any further information put out in quite some time. Not even a ‘have patience, we’re still working on it.’

Maybe it’s one of those — whatchamacallum – Urban Legends.

I welcome a new message board at Snopes, but I predict it will be a nightmare to moderate. Or else it will turn into a worthless free-for-all site.

Considering that the old board there had continued on for quite some time with only minimal problems after active moderation pretty much disappeared, I don’t see why a new one would be particularly hard to moderate.

I just don’t know whether we’re ever going to get a new one; or, if we do, how it’ll be run.

Why thorny locust? We have a little hobby farm and I’m continually battling locust trees that send up new shoots every year. They are thorny bastards that we cut down and burn every spring.

So, I see your name and cringe a little inside.

I was a member for a while but I caught Barb in an error. She fixed it then denied it had ever existed.

Bitch.

The Snopes message board was how I found this place (back in 2008), as they recommended a Cecil Adams article and I followed it here. However, I deliberately chose a different username here because the one I used there was one I used everywhere online.

That said, you probably never knew me. I didn’t post a lot on Snopes, because, for some reason, even after multiple posts, I had to be manually approved on each post. And, by the time that happened, the conversation would often have moved on. I PM’d them about it, but never got a reply, and they have a “one account per user” rule, so I never tried a different account to see if it was just something messed up with my account (or if it had been hacked and used as a spam account).

I did correct Barbara before, but I never did so on the forums, just using the Feedback link. I have no idea if she ever corrected the mistake I pointed out. I remember the mistake, but not the article. That said, I hold no ill will towards anyone there.

Same experience here. I had an account there and read some threads, but never got to the point where my posts would show up in a reasonable amount of time. No idea what name I used there…

Yup, that’s the tree. Once it’s got its roots in, it’s stubborn and determined and next to impossible to get out of there. If you cut it down, it just grows back. And then there’s the thorns.

It also makes the best fence posts in the world. No treatment needed; I’ve seen fifty year old vineyard posts still solid in the ground in a harsh climate – biggest problem is getting the staples into them because the old wood’s so hard. And it makes fantastic firewood; hot burn and long lasting, keep you warm all winter. And it’s a nitrogen fixer, improves the soil.

So: not to everybody’s taste, no. But there are those who are strongly in favor of the whole package.
– Barbara’s not connected with snopes any longer. They got divorced, and there was a whole mess that followed upon that.

I was there ages ago. I joined here in 1999 and was considered an “Old Regular” on snopes by that time. Back then we posted with our real names (and a clever internym). When things switched over I used Spud there as well. I tried to go back a few times but they didn’t recognize my account anymore and I didn’t feel like jumping through all their new hoops. I was the first person to respond to the British School Kids of NFBSK fame. I doubt that any of the really old timers like me are (were) still around now.

Yeah, I’ve been there for a long time. It’s been pretty dead the past year, though.

Whoop! I came in a lot later than that, not until 2007 (though I’d been lurking for a while), and only knew that as a story.

I feel like asking for an autograph.

Should be a couple of us trickling over now. Maybe even double-digit numbers of us!

I really isn’t that exciting. It was a school project that their teacher had suggested to learn about the very early days of what would now be considered social media. They found snopes (or maybe still back then known as the San Fernando Valley something, something, something… (that happens when you get old.)) They wanted to know why we put funny things between our names. It was the norm to put John “spooky” Doe if you were responding to a ghost story, etc. I gave them a simple explanation on the internyms, but it was soon after that that the small group of us realized we probably needed to remember that we weren’t the only ones looking at the message board.

I also wrote one of the lost legends. I’m credited in one of the sources, which if you read the title and publishing company make it pretty clear.

Funny… there was a time when the Straight Dope board went down and they all invaded snopes in mass. Probably what eventually got me to come here.

You are all very welcome here. Like minded people from what I remember.

I was a fairly frequent poster under my own name from about 1997 on. I was there for the Friday pool flush and was a long time member of the SLC. Which still exists. i am still in touch with Meghan who married Eric the Lizardman. Still communicate with Chloe, Mama Duck, Turquoise Girl, Lanie, and AnglRdr.

Barb was pretty heavy handed in her moderation, and not the easiest person to get along with. But she got shafted. While I still respect David’s research, as a human he comes up short.

I understand that the new board will have fees. Rotsa ruck. it was fun while it lasted, but time to move on.

Wow, BeeGee I’m sure we have crossed paths before. I remember Meghan and her urban legend related tatoos, and of course it would be hard to forget Eric. They went on Springer or Maury a time or two. Do you remember when access to the pool was clicking on a certain period in a post?

I have trouble remembering names, but are Bonnie, or Helen Wheelz still around? There are many others I would remember if I had a nudge, and many others that were kicked off long ago (DIF, with his shadows in space… not to mention a comment that referenced a flashlight and an asshole directed at David which I believe was his last post.) You are probably familiar with the Blue Marlin Lounge.

ISTR that the ‘internym’ thing came from (and this is REALLY going back) alt.folklore.urban, back in the days of newsgroups, right?
