I posted there for a while - don’t recall if it was under the screen name of Shodan or something else. Haven’t been back in years.

There were actually two incursions into the Snopes board. One happened early in the days of this board when one of the mods got cashiered, then banned. A group of SDMB members left in a snit in support of the mod and started posting on Snopes. The reception was. . . somewhat chilly.
When the board went down, I think a lot of people tried again to post on Snopes, but I think more started posting on Opal’s board, as she had recently upgraded her board.
Also still around, though it’s going FB only.
All moved in. Even found my avatar.
I learned about the Dope from the Snopes board. I recall that somebody there said the SDMB was a pretty good board, but Dopers could be really condescending.
I’ve long since forgotten my Snopes username; I stopped hanging out there ages ago.
Welcome to the Straight Dope everyone from Snopes
Thanks, Bone and others!
These boards really do feel a lot to me like snopes when I first joined.
I’m afraid I’ve been doing a lot of posting – a month of deprivation seems to have piled up a lot of frustrated posting desire. [ETA: also, it just won’t stop raining.]
Good to see the familiar names here! though some of these references are from before my time. (I find myself wanting to go check the members list for last post dates, but of course that’s gone too – )
I remember that. The main issue is the snopes board at the time was still a fairly small and tight knit community. Regulars had been posting for quite some time and we had inside jokes (Svenska Limpa) and the such. We would get a new poster from time to time and when they got used to the place they were warmly welcomed.
Then one day a ton of new posters came on board… and they all knew each other, and they had their own inside jokes (which the “regulars” didn’t get) and the place was flooded with posts. The social area was “the pool” (originally a betting pool on when the next poster would ask a well known question) and suddenly there were lots of posts like “I like this pool”… “come on over and sit on my lap”… “no, you sit on my lap” etc. It just wasn’t the tone we had become used to and some people didn’t take it well.
Doesn’t make it right, but that is why it was a “chilly” welcome.
I feel like a history teacher (not that there’s anything wrong with that)
I’ve just signed on having had the impetuous to do so from the Reddit posting.
While I was mostly a lurker from the old message board, I did really enjoy the community and am so glad to see some familiar user names here.
I was also lucky in that I could use both my old user name and profile picture here.
Thanks for pointing me in this direction, it’s really nice to see some old faces.

I joined there (same name) sometime in the late 2000s. I think that was well after the real heyday, but it was still way more active than it was for the last several years. Message boards in general are on a declining trajectory, but it had been neglected for years (I don’t think there was even a link on the main site) and clearly didn’t fit in with the changes and growth of the main business. Whatever the new forum is, I doubt there’s any intention of it being a continuation of the old one.
Oh, yes, the old ‘SLC.’ “If you don’t know what this is, you probably shouldn’t be posting here.” Or something like that.
Also somewhat noteworthy is that around that it wasn’t long before the SDMBers started flocking over to the Snopes board that they had upgraded their board so that the formats were much more similar to SDMB. I don’t recall the name of the previous format, but it was much more primitive.
Long time snopester (Stan The Man), first time Straight Doper…
I’m also here from there. I had registered but I’m not sure I ever posted way back in the pool, SLC, Svenska Limpa days. Then eventually I tried to post after a board move/upgrade and it didn’t work. I had to reregister, and at that point became a regular poster. My Snopes username was also related to Erwin Schrodinger.
I started checking in with these boards sometime in the last year (well, I guess around June last year), because it has been clear for a while that the Snopes boards were dying/dead. I have major doubts about any plans for something new actually happening or being viable. I liked the similarity of these boards in terms of using actual evidence for fact-based claims, valuing reasoned debate, as well as there being a sense of community, and the existence of active moderation/involvement.
Thanks for the words of welcome, and it’s great to see some familiar (in some cases from long ago) user names here.
Welcome repatriated Snopers.
So what the fuck is Svenska Limpa?
Swedish Rye of course.
Long story short. There was a poster who was obsessed with Wisconsin Dells and old radio broadcasters. He would post long rambling stories. He posted a “funny” story about a broadcaster who ended up somehow saying Svenska Limpa. He never did explain why it was funny so it kind of became our version of “No Soap Radio.” In other words a punchline that makes no sense. People got quite creative in working it casually into their posts.
Yup… which is where David and Barbara “met.”
Yeah, that was “back when the board was black.” No sub forums, just the one. Black background with I think white font. I think each post had to have a title and the main page looked kind of like a horizontal family tree. If you responded to the main post you would get a “branch” from there and if you would respond to a response you would get a branch from that. You had to click on the branch to read it IIRC.
I’ve never felt older in my life.
I’m here from the Snopes message board as well. Joined in 2005 - well after its heyday, but while the community was still pretty active. I hadn’t been very active over there for several years, but I was just starting to check the boards more often, and then it was gone. I’m happy to see some familiar names and avatars and am looking forward to getting familiar with this message board and its many threads. It could take awhile.
I posted there long before I found this place, I used the same name as i used to have here and after an online stalking incident I changed names and laid low everywhere, by the time I got back there all the people and in-jokes had changed and I didn’t stay. I was always quite pissed off that they had the The Repository Of Lost Legends on site, it sent us a continual stream of puzzled folks and I found it counter productive and a distraction. Barb and I argued about it quite a lot.
Cervus here. I joined the snopes boards in 2002 and was quite an active poster, so having the board shut down with little warning and no further communication has really left a bad taste in my mouth. I’ve been lurking around a bit here since someone linked to this thread from reddit. There’s a lot more activity than I expected, which is good.
