Others here from snopes messageboard?

Welcome to the SDMB, Snopers turned Dopers!

The move to Discourse has killed many a community. Part of the point of Discourse is to make people more careful about what they post. That’s good… but even nice people don’t want to be tied to what they have said online: one of the original features of the internet was that “online, nobody knows that you are a dog”

Does Discourse make you post publicly under your IRL name? I’ve never used it.
Making you at least stick to the same username, as this board seems to, serves a lot of the same purpose without most of the downsides: as somebody (I don’t know who) appended to that saying some time ago ‘nobody knows if you’re a dog, but everybody knows if you’re an ass.’

Ok, I’m here, too. I was on the fence about signing up here, but everyone else is doing it so I will follow the herd. And also things are pretty slow at work right now and I’m bored.

Stupid newbie question: Do threads here just disappear after they fall off the bottom of the page? I was planning on commenting on the “Replace car with the same model or get something different?” poll as I was in almost that exact situation quite recently, but that thread seems to be gone now.

WildaBeast: take a look at the “Display Options” box near the bottom of each subforum. I think it defaults to only show threads from the past couple days unless you manually change it.

I joined the Straight Dope forum years ago, but I was also a regular at the Snopes forum since '98 or '99 (under my real name since the other posters weren’t big on handles back then). I wasn’t too surprised when the Snopes forums went away, since, as mentioned, traffic had slowed way down and many of the subforums hadn’t been posted in for 1-2 years. Also urban legends became less enjoyable as they went from being fun to learn about and discuss (“this wild story happened to a friend of a friend”, Van Halen and the brown M&Ms, etc.) to just being depressing as they became increasingly weaponized as fake news.

Ah ha! Thanks.

It’s mostly used by people who want to get rid of random “guest” accounts.

Typically, they allow you to connect using your FB or Google account or a local account verified by your email. So it’s not like it’s your “real” name. Except that for many people, their email address or Face Book account is just as real a name as the one their mother gave them.

I had to figure this out. I think I hadn’t adjusted my snopes options since we had moved from the previous version.

Nice to see so many active threads, the (former) snopesters and the warm welcome from the Dopers.

So I was listening to Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me last weekend, and heard a story about a man in Florida being cited by police for playing basketball in the nude. And I was like “Why has no one posted this in the Florida Man thread?” (a long running thread on the snopes board). “I should post it there if no one else has,” I thought. And then I remembered. Apparently I haven’t fully accepted that the snopes message board is gone.

I was on the Snopes message board in the '90s, when it didn’t look anything like modern message boards. I think I used my real name.

One day someone (I think it was David B) asked for support on the SDMB in an argument with Libertarian (later Liberal) about the “In the butt, Bob” controversy. I came over here and very rarely revisited Snopes.

Hi Wildabeast! Good to see you. Did you get your Miata?

A Florida Man thread would be spectacular.

Yes.

Congrats! She’s beautiful!

I said before I got it that having a two seater would give me an excuse to not drive when going to lunch with coworkers. In practice I find I’m actually looking for excuses to drive. Like yesterday, five people going to lunch, thus needing 2 cars unless we really squeeze in, and I’m like “This is perfect weather to drive the Miata! I can take one person.”

Congratulations! It is a beauty. And good for you for going for it.

Haha I remember that!

My insurance broker, who is awesome, recommended temporarily excluding my husband from my insurance to keep my rates low because he had an accident a few years ago. Now that we’ve reached the point where enough time has passed that I could add him back on, I find myself a little reluctant. Nobody drives Ariel but me!

Late to the party, but I guess snopes won’t be on discourse any time soon (no new information, but then that’s kind of the point).

Hi ASL!

– yeah, there’s a distinct lack of discourse happening over there.

The main page now has a membership coming soon link, which appears to be about paid memberships of some sort. Whatever’s happening there isn’t happening (yet), either; and it’s probably gonna happen without me if it does.

The FAQ page doesn’t include ‘what happened to the message board?’ Not that I was really expecting it to.

I almost forgot about the promised new Discourse message board, which is a pretty good indication that I’ve given up on the idea of it ever actually happening.
