I noticed a couple months ago that my right ear didn’t hear as well as my left.
It started to puzzle me and I went to see a specialist yesterday.
I might have otosclerosis.
A hearing test in two weeks will confirm/rebute that theorie, and assess my hearing loss.
The doctor seemed pretty confident that what it could be.
Otosclerosis is a disease that causes one of the small bone in the middle ear to stop vibrating, hence, the progressive loss of hearing. From what I understand some spongious substance grows on the bone and prevent it’s movement.
The only solution is an hearing aid, but it will get worse over time anyway, or a surgery. (that seems successful)
The doctor talked to me about the surgery and they basically either replace the whole bone with a platinum of teflon prosthetic piece or replace a small part of the bone.
It is a micro-surgery thru your ear canal. (no outside incision).
Does anybody on the board had this surgery performed? Of course, I am a little worried and would like to know as much as I can.
FYI, this disease is quite commun in young adult females from what I was told, and gets worse (well, can get worse) with pregnancy. No doctors really know what causes it, althought it is believed to be hereditary, nobody in my family has this that we know of…
Any help, comments, would be appreciated!
Thanks guys!
