Ottto teaches Northern Irish Politics 101

In this thread a post was made that both scared me and intriuged me at the same time.

It intriuged me that someone would be that ignorant to the situation that is happening in my country, but still would comment on it as if he were an expert.

It scared me that someone would be that ignorant to the situation that is happening in my country, but still would comment on it as if he were an expert.

I by no means claim to be an expert on these matters, but I feel that it would be a good idea to have a reference thread and the matter seems to be debated a fair amount on these boards.

Ottto, please instruct me on the finer points of the political situation in my country, as I seem to have my understanding completely wrong.

You wanted to make this into an Ad Hominem attack, but I’m not letting you away that easily.

Please explain to me how my ability to separate the various elements of Ulster Unionism into terrorist / non-terrorist means and objectives makes me a drooling idiot.

It also may shock you to learn that I am a Nationalist.

Aside from myself, I do take offence to the two others mentioned in that thread being referred to as “Drooling Idiots”.

Would you like to expand upon this?

Please do, and You seriously need some schooling.

I never liked him after he did that nasty thing to Michael Palin.

My favorite bit was when he advised ruadh to “read a book” about Irish politics.

Fuck that. In my opinion ruadh should write a book about Irish politics.

Oh thank you for starting this, Twisty.

People do comment on things in other people’s countries - it’s only fair - sometimes when they are partially informed, and sometimes when they are well-informed.

However, when they know absolutely fucking dick-all-nothing about the subject, they should probably keep their stupid gob shut.

I was going to write you a cunningly-crafted series of insults, but then I had a look at your posts in other threads, ottto, and this one really stood out:

I certainly don’t have such a list ottto.

That marvellous stroke of genius says far more about you than I could ever hope to achieve with an insult.

Sits back and waits for the bitch slapping to begin

Seriously ottto get a clue ya muppet.

UU’s are just people who agree with the Union and are from Ulster well the 6 counties that constitute NI, Ulster is actually a province that consists of 9 counties 3 of which are in the Republic.

But you knew that already didn’t you

Nationalists are people who agree with the concept of a united Ireland. All of them are not terrorists either. Or do you think that we’re all terrorists over here?

Now where’s my balaclava?

L_C D,D,Don’t t,t,taaaalk to m,m,m,me abou,u,u,u,t that ba,ba,ba,sar,r,r,rtard. He ki ki ki ki killllled Wa Wa Wa Wanda

Ottto, barefoot and One Cell are in this together you know. It must be a conspiracy.

To my Irish neighbors I say only that you are being far to kind to this vermin.

The courtesy and politeness you extend to him is most commendable in face of the insulting ignorance, bigotry and bickering slurs that young Ottto bandies around.

You have the wholehearted support of this part of the EU contingency as well.

Carry on the dissection,

Sparc

Fair enough to air your complete and total ignorant and uninformed opinions about a country you have never visited, but in the event of one of its citizens pointing out you are completely and utterly wrong, have the grace to shut the fuck up and actually learn something.

I agree istara! So many people are just pleased as punch to stay true to their misinformed opinions.

Maybe I can finally find out what ‘ulster’ means…

“Ulster”? Shit, all this time I thought Ian Paisley was saying he had an ulcer. I thought that’s why he was always pissed off.

If this is a serious question, spooje, it’s quite simple.

There are four provinces in the island of Ireland: Connacht, Munster, Leinster and Ulster.

Ulster is the northernmost one, and comprises nine counties: Tyrone, Donegal, Down, Antrim, Derry, Armagh, Fermanagh, Cavan and Monaghan.

The confusion lies with Northern Ireland, which is a political division based on the partition of the island of Ireland, and comprises 6 of the 9 counties of Ulster (it excludes Monaghan, Cavan and Donegal, which are in the Republic of Ireland).

For convenience (and possibly some other more devious motives to which I am not party), the Ulster Unionists, their political allies, and much of the British establishment incorrectly refer to Northern Ireland as “Ulster” - NI being only a sub-set of Ulster.

Thanks!

istara, perhaps he had a pint of guinness once, or maybe he saw an Irish wolfhound.

::runs for cover before Ottto sees this and goes off on one about oppressive paramilitary outerwear::

Yojimdo

“To call you stupid would be an insult to stupid people. I’ve known sheep that could outwit you. I’ve worn dresses with higher I.Qs.”–Wanda to Otto

Of course, I meant to say (clears throat) Dressmaking: its role in the Troubles

My apologies.

Yojimdo…? Mayde, I’m stupib too.

A handy mnemonic for the 6 countires that comprise “Northern Ireland” - ** FATDAD**

Fermanagh

Antrim

Tyrone

Derry

Armagh

Down

Celyn,

Of course, for some the mnemonic would be FATLAD:wink:

Twisty - maybe he is “oirish” as in his great-great-grandfather’s uncle’s dentist once stayed the night in Dublin on the way to the World Ignorance Fair of 1806.
