Gotta brag on 'em! I took Dianasaurus, and Johnzilla to Elderly’s Instruments in Lansing, MI the other day, and they proceeded to absolutely FREAK OUT the employees!
As most of you know, from hearing Persephone (Cristi) tell it, I’m an absolute guitar junkie. If music is my business, then guitar is my hobby. Anyhoo, these kids have been raised around that kind of atmosphere (same as me when I was a kid - dad was a fiddle player). So, it wouldn’t be unusual for my kids to know more about guitars, and famous guitarists than your average adult.
We walk in, and the first thing that they see is a display case with photos of Django Reinhardt (French gypsy guitarist from the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s, who only had use of two fingers on the fingerboard hand), some Django CD’s, and a replica of the Maccaferri guitar that he played. Both kids, simultaneously said “DJANGO!” when they saw it. You should’ve seen the jaws drop on the sales people!
Then, Diana proceeded to look about the room and say stuff like “There’s a nice Telecaster, and that’s a beautiful Les Paul”. Oh, Daddy was VERY proud!
There was a benefit show for me and the kids here in town, and Diana got up and sang a Texas Ruby song with me and the band. Oh, the look on her little face! She was just getting ALL the way into it! She stole the show for sure! Before we started, she sang an E note, and has us all tune up to her (she has perfect pitch at 7 years old!). I have her sing notes, and check her with a tuner afterwards - she’s almost never wrong! I’ve been playing guitar for over 35 years, and she’ll let me know if I’m a little out of tune, the little rascal!
I wish her Mom could’ve seen that. I feel certain that she probably did see it!
