And is driving our male cat crazy with her displays and trilling. He was holding her down and biting her on the back but now he’s hiding on top of the fridge.
Of course this happened after business hours on a Friday.
We adopted her to be a companion to him. We like cuddling cats.
How do you folks suggest we help them stay friends during these unsettled times?
And yes, she will be spayed as soon as possible. Returning her to the shelter isn’t an option so if they can’t/won’t have their vet spay her sooner than we can get her scheduled, we will pay for it ourselves.
I just want them to be buddies after she recovers from her surgery.
Well there’s cuddling cats and then there’s cats. Which can be noisy even if confined in the next room.
Of course you could drown out the cat-erwauling with some of your own. 100+ lb humans can make a lot more noise than ~10 lb cats if they put their minds to it.
You do know that the first thing I do to male cats is have their balls cut off, right?
And that’s the problem here. George never got old enough to know what sex was before we cruelly removed his ability so he’s very confused and starting to hide from her because she is so fucking annoying.
Wow, they really do lie to you about everything in WV, don’t they? Poor GG, poor Bella, poor you guys!
I don’t have any expertise in this, but it seems like the best thing you can do for them both right now is keep them separated. It will be very hard, but less confusing for GG when all is said and done.
Bella is a resilient little thing. She’ll hate it, but she won’t be traumatized after it’s over. GG seems more sensitive and has more to be confused and wary about.
Good luck. It’s going to be an unpleasant weekend, I imagine.
I am seriously pissed off about this. Had they told us she wasn’t fixed, we would have been able to deal with it.
I do think that Bella just managed to slip through the cracks and I’m sure they will want to make things right, but the poor fuzzbutts are so confused. And things were going so well.
I don’t have any experience with that, either. All my shelter cats were spayed and neutered before the shelter released them. (And the only non-shelter cats I’ve owned were boys.) I do have experience with cats in heat (that i was giving back to the shelter after fostering, or neighbor’s cats). My best guess is also that you should separate them. Cats in heat are very disconcerting. I’ve seen neutered males run away and cower in fear and confusion. And i was pretty disconcerted when a kitten in heat assured me that she wanted ME to fuck her. I tried calmly explaining that i was the wrong species and the wrong sex…
Anyway, yeah, i think this might traumatize the boy, but the girl is going to get over it when her hormones settle down. Try keeping them apart for a bit if you can.
Seconding. If he were OK with it and doing the best he can, and considering that he’s neutered so can’t get her pregnant, I’d say leave them alone and let them get to it. However, despite the holding-her-down-and-biting-her bit, which indicates that his instincts are partly functional, that doesn’t seem to be working out. I’d separate them until she either comes out of heat or comes back from the vet, whichever comes first.
If that seems to distress him even worse (as she’ll probably be howling for him from the other side of the door), you might reconsider.
It may be harder to break than you think. Both of those cats seemed to really want another cat companion.
Cats are seasonally polyestrus and remain in heat until they are bred. You can insert a swizzle stick (or similar rod) into her vagina relatively forcefully and she will ovulate and come out of estrus(heat).
