So our newest kitty, Fred, is experiencing her first heat (is that grammatically correct?). She squirning around on the floor, rubbing her face against any solid object, and making odd trilling noises.
She’s looks confused and pained. She’s normally a playful cat who likes to chase paper balls around the house and run around inside small cardboard boxes.
Now she just flops around “presenting” to me and anyone who walks by (but mostly me). I feel sorry for her, but there’s nothing I can do. Hopefully, it won’t last much longer.
As least she’s not spotting. Luckily, she’s not very vocal. She can barely meow under normal circumstances. She was a stray the kids’ stepmom picked up, but couldn’t keep. She’s a nice soft and fluffy addition to the house. Much friendlier than the other two cats (also females). We’re gonna have to get them all fixed soon.
It usually takes the other two cats about a week to get over this.
Is it considered cruel to NOT have female cats fixed if they are never to breed? Seems they are experiencing some pain.
Before we got Stupid fixed many, many moons ago (she’s no longer with us) my husband rolled over in bed, poked me in the ribs with his elbow and told me to “take care of that cat. A pencil and some corn oil should do the trick.”
There is a British comedian called David Baddiel who once had a similar problem with his female cat. He said that he read a book that recommended lubricating a cotton bud and… well, you know. That’s meant to do the trick.
BTW, A female cat called Fred… really?
What’s wrong with Fred? I was called Fred for the better part of two years. Long story. Ya had to be there.
I think Fred is a cool name for a girl kitty. And you definitely need to get her spayed. We got our boy kitty fixed not too long ago - he’s as chipper as ever - doesn’t seem to miss his parts at all.
Personally, I think it is. It is sexual frustration, and it is cruel when you can do something about it (spay), and don’t.
I lost a lot of sleep when my rescued female went into heat, I actually picked her up form her former (non) owner while she was in heat. (the reason for her surrender - she was too loud). So when I got my other female kitten, I had the spay done as soon as the vet would do it. Saved me (and her) a lot of grief.
I’ve already posted what is done in my house when a cat goes into heat, but given the TMI nature of the other thread, I’ll reiterate:
When she presents, get up behind her and hold her tail down tight against the floor. Get a good grip cuz she’ll pull against it pretty hard. Then make a fist and put one knuckle on either side of the base of her tail. Push down. (You might also want someone to hold her by the nape of the neck if she’s a really strong cat - the tom bites her there anyway.) The cat will proceed to growl, yell, moan, whatever. When she’s done she’ll pull away - stay clear as she’ll be all claws for at least the first few times.
Haven’t tried actually sticking anything in there but this method would seem to be safer.
I’ve been told that each time a female cat goes into heat, she’s in physical pain. Also, if she’s not fixed by a certain age, she’ll go into a perma-heat until she gets laid.
Not sure about pain, but they certainly feel discomfort. My roommate and I do cat rescue and had a Mama cat go into heat. She’s part Siamese, which makes for a very long heat as well as a very annoying meow. We had an appointment at a low cost clinic scheduled for weeks but finally we couldn’t take the ‘calling’ anymore and called our private vet. Got her spayed two days later and it was worth every penny. She’s a much happier cat for it too.
Please get Fred and your other cats spayed as soon as possible. Unspayed cats are at risk for severe uterine infections that can kill them. Waiting to spay also increases their risk of breast cancer. Fair warning, she’ll probably put on some weight afterwards.
When our little girl Newt went into heat and presented herself to me, I would grasp the back of her neck firmly between the knuckle of my index finger and the thumb, like a Tom would bite her. With the other hand, rub her hip bones above her tail, from the base and especially around the knobs of her pelvis on top.
She loved it. And she was my friend forever. Until we had to give her away, that is. (We had too many females (3) and it got to be a “let’s all piss in the favorite spots of the other two” contest.)
Damn, I still miss her. Have a picture of her sitting in my pants (as they lay on the bed before I put them on) on my fridge. Unfortunately, I’ll never see her again, as she was given to my ex-wife’s Therapist.
I’ve been on this board a long time. Still, nothing has quite prepared me to learn that there are people out there who apply makeshift dildos to their cat’s womanhood :dubious:
I can’t believe nobody mentioned it yet. If you get her spayed, there is a zero percent chance that she’ll get ovarian and uterus cancer when she gets older. Can’t have cancer of what don’t exist. She’ll also be less likely to get mammary cancer as well.
I also have a picture of me standing with my pants around my ankles, with her curled up in them. She used to come into the bathroom when I was on the toilet and climb into my pants.
One day I got up after finishing and washing up, shuffled into the living room (with Newt still in my pants) and said very slyly to my wife; “I want you to know that I have a girl on the side who just loves to get into my pants”. She jumped up laughing and just had to take a picture. (No, it’s not dirty, my shirt covered me well enough)
Unspeyed cats and dogs are at extreme risk of developing breast cancer when they get older. It’s a nasty disease, and the sooner you get them fixed (ideally before their first heat) the less likely they are to get it.
