The nurses and CNAs are fed up with management’s demands of extra hours at straight hourly pay and being constantly understaffed so they are walking. The State is pissed about the same stuff, but one administrator was heard saying she’d rather pay fines than be “over” staffed, overstaffing in her eyes meaning the legal minimum of nurses and aides per X number of residents.

This will inconvenience me but I will find it delicious because I dislike management here, and may drop the name of the lawyer who advertises heavily on daytime TV about nursing home abuse.

If it goes on very long, do you think there are people who will wind up sent to hospitals simply b/c the regular care they need is not available where you are?

Does your state not have an OT law? Here in Nevada, by law, all hours worked past 40 in a single week are OT hours compensatable at 1.5x the going rate.

You’d think, wouldn’t you? Maybe there’s an exemption for medical people.

I don’t know the details, but from the sounds of it it almost sounds like the company is violating labor law in order to turn a profit, and the fines are a smaller price to pay than to fulfill the required staffing requirements.

If so are there any government departments you can complain to about this?

If your employer is deliberately understaffing, they should be shut down.

Quit chuckling about it and call your state’s regulatory body, the Medicaid fraud line, and for good measure, your local TV station.

The way I have always measured things around here: Well within the blast perimeter of O’Hare. I won’t have time to notice the flash, much less duck and cover.

The time-and-a-half for overtime regulation is part of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act. RN’s who are salaried are exempt from the reg., but LPN’s and CNA’s are not exempt, whether they’re on salary or hourly wages. The fine is up to $1,000 per violation. (That’s per employee.) Repeated violations can result in jail time.

That’s in addition to whatever state laws are in force.

You don’t need proof to call in the complaints. The proof will be found when TPTB audit the institution in question.

Mrs. L.A. worked in nursing homes before she got her BSN. She said many such facilities do not meet legal staffing minimums, nor industry guidelines as to the amount of time patients should receive. ISTR her mentioning that at a place in another state, there was one nurse for 30 patients.

Her capstone project for her BSN was about this situation.

I think his wi-fi situation is hinky at best. I hope this doesn’t throw him completely offline. He mentioned picket line jumpers might be the staff today.
I’m worried. Sounds volatile and dangerous to the patients.
