Out of State Parking Ticket

Dr_Parika: Hey, thanks for contributing to our state coffers. On what stretch of road did you get nailed?

Some states enforce unpaid minor tickets by keeping records at the Dept of Motor Vehicles. When you attempt to renew your registration, or perform any other transaction, you’ll be told you must clear your outstanding legal debts (which probably includes non-appearance and late payment fees by this point) before doing anything else. Presumedly, some of these states are willing to extend this program to out of state violations as well, either out of reciprocity or for a cut of the swag. On a personal note, when I grew up in northern New York, it was a commonly held belief that Canadian parking tickets could be ignored with impunity by Americans and vice versa.

Regarding the signatures, isn’t this used as proof that you actually received the ticket (that you were “served” the summons)? If there was no signature present, couldn’t you claim that you’d never seen the damn thing before, and get it tossed out?

I got nailed on Labour Day on that little stretch of Hwy.95 near Portsmouth. My understanding is since New Hampshire has a low tax rate, it depends on stuff like tickets (speeding and lottery) and selling booze to pay for its schools and stuff.

A university roommate got nailed in Florida several years ago. I think his bill is up to $4000 now, not that he has any plans of paying it. I already paid my $86, on the off chance I get nailed again while visiting the White Mountains.
