What happens today to out-of-state traffic tickets, as far as driving records and insurance are concerned? I’m a Connecticut resident with CT insurance going to college in Massachusetts - if I get a ticket while zooming back home along I-90 (in MA) this Christmas, will it be reported to CT and my insurance company? Or, can I just pay the fine to MA and be on my merry way, without worrying about rate increases and other unpleasantness?
Note: this question is purely hypothetical. At the moment, at least.
It depends on the reciprocity agreement between the state where your license is issued and the one where you got your ticket. I am having trouble finding Massachusetts reciprocity laws right now but I would bet my left arm that this recoprocity is in effect. I will try to find out for you.
The insurance companies do their inquiries in different ways and they may or may not find out but they probably would because they are neighboring states. If you got your ticket in say, Utah, it could be different.
I’m almost postive that tickets go back and forth between MA and CT. It’s pretty hard to hide from a ticket these days no matter what state you live in and what state the ticket is issued in. Pay it, it will come back to haunt you sometime down the line.
You want to look up the Drivers License Compact or the NRVC. And yes, both MA and CT are member states (MA is a NRVC state, but not a DLC state). If you get a ticket in MA and they suspend your license for nonpayment, for example, your home state of CT will also suspend your license.
I know not paying it would be a bad idea, but what I’m wondering is whether my insurance company will find out about it. It sounds like the answer to that question is yes.
Darn! Not that I would take advantage of the situation if the answer was no, of course.
I’m kind of wondering the same thing, because I got a ticket about a month ago in TX, but I live in AR. (Don’t worry… I’ve paid it :p) The officer didn’t even bother to check my insurance, though. Where is this list of stuff that I can see whether or not they have a reciprocity agreement?
I got a speeding ticket from a statie in MA - on 495- in 1997. It was never reported to my (NH) insurance company. I paid the $100 and suffered no other ills.
