Outlander Season 3 discussion thread (spoilers as it airs)

She got caught with that in S1, when Mrs. Fitz’ nephew was poisoned and Geillis told her he was possessed. Claire pooh-poohed such nonsense, until Geillis asked her if she’d ever encountered anything she couldn’t explain.

I like how they got into the psychology of it, that it doesn’t matter if it’s real or not if it keeps the crew happy. Of course, then you have the flip side when things go badly and the crew decides to pitch someone overboard.

I continue to be amazed at the casting director. The young man who played Elias Pound was fantastic from beginning to end.

There was a glaring omission from the Porpoise and the reason it has to get to Jamaica so quickly.

The new governor is on board. And who might that be? None other than Lord John Grey.

Jamie isn’t normally so narrow minded when it comes to Damn the Torpedoes, Full Speed Ahead, I may be helpless due to sea sickness but I’m going to lead a mutiny, but since he’s had Claire back for so short of time I’m going to give him a pass. Thank goodness Fergus had the clearer head.

Almost to the Caribbean!

My daughter’s crush has moved from Jamie to Fergus, which suits me just fine.

Haven’t watched this episode yet (we were too busy trying to finish Punisher, LOL). Ironic that I just finished reading one of the Lord Grey novellas, LOL. I’ve been kind of wondering when he and Jamie would run into each other again.

:temporarily leaves thread so as not to read spoilers:

How was the John Grey book? I’ve thought about reading one.

They’re pretty good. You should read them after you read Voyager, as they fill in some of the holes in the 20 years Claire and Jamie were apart.

It was interesting in the historical sense – no question that Gabaldon knows her stuff with attention to detail. She also knows how to tell a story and how to keep it moving. However, one thing I noticed with the novellas is that she sometimes gets so caught up with the details that she falters on resolving the plot – it’s almost like a “whoops, gotta end this!” I don’t know if she does the same with the novels. I think maybe not because, with a novel, you have more room to maneuver, and that’s what she’s used to.

I noticed the lack of music during Claire’s travels on the island…enhancing isolation?

Given the choice, I’d much rather have a snake slither over me than a swarm of biting ants.

No pirate attack, but Claire still got her arm injury and we still got turtle soup.

Fergus and Marsali’s wedding was absolutely perfect. Fergus was raised by strong women, both Claire and Jenny, so it makes sense he’d be attracted to a feisty wee lass like Marsali.

Only two episodes left. I’m getting bereft.

This episode was quite entertaining. I loved the characters of the priest and “mamacita”. They had great chemistry together, and were a refreshing addition to the story. And the priest was just crazy enough to keep you guessing about what he was going to do next. I assume that was pot he was smoking, right? A nice little nod to Cast Away with Coco (aka, Wilson). And the wedding scene was some nice, sly humor as well.

That’s the general consensus…yuba = pot.

Father Fogden is an all around nutty guy…talking to coconuts notwithstanding. He’s had a hard 15 years without his love, and living with Mamacita can’t be good for anyone’s mental health.

I smoke two joints before mamacita yells at me, and then I smoke two more!

I actually like mamacita. She is one hard working gal! I don’t blame her for not taking no shit from no one!

I presume no chance of season 4 happening in 2018 at all? I do not get why other shows can come back annually, but we have to wait longer for Outlander. I want season 4 in September.

They’re shooting Season 4 now (Sam and Cait tweet about it) so I think we’re looking at fall 2018. Sam’s appearing in a couple of upcoming movies too.

Only one more episode. :frowning: But the co-head of programming is a fan and is in early talks for Season 5.

For book readers, the reveal was not a surprise. (I believe my reaction upon reading that scene in the book for the first time was “Holy shit, you’re supposed to be dead!”) I love seeing Lotte again as Geillis.

Could Lord John be any cuter? You know if it wasn’t for Claire he’d be giving Jamie all the smooches.

Still have a ways to go to get to the book ending, but we are moving right along. I like what they’re doing with Mr. Willoughby and Margaret.

I don’t think we’re getting an extended finale like we did for Season 2, so buckle up, kiddoes.

Really weird that every single character decided to move at the same time from Scotland to Jamaica.

Well, Geillis had been there for a while and in the book, it’s the reason the Porpoise was so hot to get to Jamaica…the new governor was aboard.

Well…that was awkward! Between Young Ian trying not to gawk at the goat-blood drenched Geillis and Lord John trying to keep his composure (and not to mention Claire at the “market”), I squirmed intermittently through this episode.

Surprised nobody here has taken a stab at the “200 years” fortune re Claire. It’s obvious to whom it’s referring to, but I’m thinking that’ll be next season.

Loved Mr. Willoughby and Margaret!

Did anybody catch the Abernathy connection?

It seemed really stupid to go to the party. Huge unknown gamble when you have a warrant for treason on your head. But then, once again we get subjected to “Jamie gets arrested” as a plot element.

Anyway, the goat blood scene was priceless and I wonder if the nod to Casablanca had anything to do with the 75th anniversary. Or was that in the book, too? Claire’s expression as she’s watching the back-and-forth between the Highland Hunk and Governor Gay was also fun. She had to have some idea about what was going on.

No, in the book Geillis has put on a lot of weight. Her slaves call her Maggot. Her first words are, “I see you kept your girlish figure, Claire.” They also glossed it over in the show, but in the book, she actually holds a knife to her baby’s throat to force Dougal to help her escape.

So, she’s a sort of Geillis the Huttess?
