Outlander Season 3 discussion thread (spoilers as it airs)

Not quite that bad…the book has a more extensive description of Rose Hall, but the analogy of keeping young boys prisoner for sexual gratification is apt.

There’s a wonderfully icky scene where Claire has to remove a loa loa worm from a slave’s eye.

Wow, I had not heard that. I just told my wife last night that we were facing an entire 2018 without Outlander TV.

I really believe this show should be able to be back on annually, like Game of Thrones did for every season except the last(they needed a little extra time last time). The show has epic production values and cost, but I think a year turnaround is reasonable.

It all depends on production. Diana said to fans who wanted twenty episodes instead of sixteen that it would make Droughtlander longer, since it takes approximately the same amount of time to film an episode. More episodes = more time in production.

For those who have read the books, my idea it to split book 5 (The Fiery Cross) into two seasons, with the first season being the Gathering and the second the rest of the book. :stuck_out_tongue:

Just saw the season finale.

That was clearly a two-part episode slammed into 57 minutes. It was amazing, but wow, we had one gigantic(almost rushed) climax with Geillis followed by another huge sequence on the ship.

A lot to take in, but I eagerly await the next season. I hope it airs in 2018.

You barely had time to catch your breath!

Can I just say David Barry is the perfect Lord John? The way he politely but oh so effectively dressed down Captain–excuse me–Lieutenant Leonard was absolutely perfect.

The look on Claire’s face as she realizes just how insane Geillis is was perfect.

I especially loved how they switched up Willoughby from the book. In Voyager he’s a bitter man who we find out at the end is angry and resentful of Jamie. Here he finds love and a new home.

I think they could have shown a bit more of Jamie reviving Claire…that’s an awful long time to go without coughing up water.

I also liked how Claire initiates the sex with Jamie, both in Turtle Soup and Don’t Shave Your Beard. Very romantic.

We don’t know when S4 starts but we have Rollo, Aunt Jocasta, and Stephen Bonnet to look forward to!

Was the meeting between Geillis and Brianna in the show? (I’d like to rewatch that if I can find a YouTube clip.)

Yes, it was one of the episodes when Claire took her to Scotland. Brianna walked into a little talk Geillis was having (I think) at the local college.

This was a pretty good episode, but the one thing that bugged me is that Claire should have immediately gone to the Governor’s house for help after Jamie was arrested. I figured they had landed somewhere in the future US since the couple at the shore had basically American accents.

Yes, in the Season 2 finale. Geillis is holding a rally. Roger and Bree also meet up with Geillis at a pub later.

The bit about Claire threw me too. When last we left our happy couple, Claire was standing by the carriage in her yellow ball gown as Jamie is taken away. Next, she’s rocking in a carriage in her batsuit (yes, that’s what the costumers called her period correct costume.) So after Jamie was captured, she turned around, changed at the inn, left a note for Fersali, THEN went back to Rose Hall. A quick note to Lord John (who always looks like he’s two seconds away from giving Jamie belly scritches) and Geillis would have had to deal with a whole bunch of soldiers, not just a lonely Claire.

But then think about how anticlimactic that would have been! Claire’s always been a Act First Think Later kind of gal.

Mmm I don’t think I will look forward to Bonnet.

I agree the dressing down was perfect, and oh-so-Military. I also liked the change for Willoughby.

Well, no, but he is a juicy villain.

That went by kinda quick didn’t it? I don’t know why but I had it in my head that arriving in America was only about halfway through Book 3. I did read all 8 in one go two summer ago so I guess my memory was shaky. Another year to wait for the next :-/

An excuse to reread!

If you get a chance, download the Official Outlander podcasts from iTunes (free). Ron Moore and his writers, directors, and producers give tremendous insight into how they do things and why certain elements of the books had to be changed/eliminated. Lots of good behind the scenes info.

Didn’t she also have syphilis? They never addressed that on the show, unless I missed it.

No, but Claire jabbed Ian with penicillin just to be safe.

I haven’t read the thread yet.

I’ve been reading and rereading these books for years. I’ve managed to talk my mother, my ex mother in law and many others into reading them. My husband enjoys the show.

I do NOT enjoy the show. That is to say, some scenes are nice to see in living colour, the opening song is absolutely beautiful, as is the soundtrack for the series.(I’m a huge fan of Bear Mccreary) but that’s about it.

So I’ve been watching season 3 and I am again reminded how much I dislike the two main actors for their portrayal of Jamie and Claire. He can’t act, and she has this constant snobbish, snooty look on her face that drives me insane.

The worst part, the absolute WORST part of this is now that I’m rereading the series(again) all I can picture is the actors.

Bumping because in addition to starting a new thread for Season 4 in November…we also get Seasons 5 AND 6!

Another really belated comment here – hey, the OP said I could

BTW, I’ve never read any of the books, so no heavy spoilers, please.

I just finished the third episode of this season, with Frank dying. And I’m wondering if I should go on watching, since, honestly, I found these three episodes far from riveting. Well, the first, with getting in the story of what happened in Culloden and the immediate aftermath, was fine, but Jamie hiding out in the woods/Jamie in prison/Claire’s life in Boston and her marriage slowly dying … kind of tedious.

The show went from high drama and danger virtually every episode with ‘exotic settings’ and fascinating characters to sort of just plodding along to fill in required backstory. It made me long for one of those authorial narrative recaps.

You know, just toss in a few paragraphs along the lines of “Jamie was wounded at Culloden but survived, and escaped execution. He spent X years in prison and as a indentured servant while continually mourning his lost love. After her return, Claire and Frank decided to try to make a go of their marriage. They moved to Boston, where Claire became a surgeon and they raised Jamie’s daughter, Bree, though their marriage was unhappy and crumbled. Twenty years after Claire returned through the stone she and Bree go to England and”

and then pick up the story where something (hopefully) of interest starts happening again.

I guess what I’m asking is, does the show go back to being dramatic and full of twists and shocking happenings now?
