Outside length of a menstrual cycle?

Ok, I am trying to get pregnant, and I think I might be. But I’m not really sure when my period is supposed to come because when I was younger I never really kept track, and I’ve only had one period in the last 18 months (I had a baby 9 months ago).

That period was on December 9th, 34 days ago. 34 days seems pretty long to me (I was taught in school that 28 days was normal, but that it could be longer or shorter, but we were never told how much longer or shorter.) I also have had other symptoms, but it could just be that I really want to be pregnant.

So how many days should I wait before buying a test? Is 34 long enough? Should I wait the whole month out, just in case?

Some kits claim to be able to detect a pregnancy before a period is even missed, but their accuracy is not that great. The rule of thumb is that the kit is nearly 100% reliable if used when you are 7 days past your expected menstruation date. But not knowing your usual cycle length makes that a bit trickier.

Of course, if you test now and its positive, then you know you are pregnant. If it’s negative, try it again in a week. Still negative at that point, and you probably aren’t.

Hope that helps

of course you should follow the kit directions, and the first morning urine is best for reliable testing, as it is more concentrated.

34 isn’t really all that long, but then, if you had a shorter cycle before, it would be. Then again, there are some people (myself included) who have really irregular cycles naturally…I ranged from a short of 26 to a long of 57, and there wasn’t anything wrong with me…its just how I was. I now take the pill to regulate that cycle a bit more.

I would take a pregnancy test anyways. Like the Doctor said, if its positive, then you know youre pregnant, and if not, well waiting a bit longer to find out won’t be any worse than what youre doing now, right?

Good luck!
