For me, Antiques Roadshow seems as if it would have some great outtakes.
I love the show, and I get a kick out of seeing something that turns out to be extremely valuable, much to the owners surprise and delight, but I just know that there has to be items that owners are sure are valuable, that turn out to be worthless.
It happens every now and then (items are usually fakes) and the owner is politely disappointed, but surely there must be some scenes where the owner is thouroughly pissed that the piece of junk he/she brings in is absolutely worthless.
Or scenes like: “This is definitely a Chinese marble lion from the Tang dynasty made somewhere around the 6th to 9th century A.D., and I would value this to be between $10,000 and $15,000…” elbow bumps statue, it falls to floor and shatters…
I don’t think such outtakes would ever be aired by PBS, but there just has to be some real good ones…
Any other shows that you suspect would have some great outtakes?
Something very much like this actually happened on TechTV. They had an expert on the show, and he was holding one of the earliest recording ever made – a wax cylinder made by Edison before he got around to using a vinyl disk to make recordings. The guy was holding it up and talking about how incredibly rare and valuable the cylinder was … only a handful still in existence … when it suddenly shattered into many, many tiny shards in his hand. Man, it was a priceless moment.
I saw another one on ScreenSavers involving Aerogel - they were showing a sample of the stuff and one of the hosts shattered it…
It was interesting to know that Aerogel is not soft and spongy, but hard(ish) and brittle.
My parents went to one of the Antiques Roadshows. They didn’t get on the air (and nothing they had was particularly valuable) but my mom was a bit miffed at them. She had brought an old shoe repair kit that my grandfather had used in his shop. She says at first they were very excited about it and several people had talked to her about it, then they suddenly started asking her if she had any pictures of him using the kit. She didn’t but was asked about pictures several times and one person even suggested she go home and look for some and to come back the next day with them. Once she managed to convince them that she didn’t have any they suddenly lost interest and told her the kit wasn’t worth anything.
So, apparently, the value of an item depends on if you have pictures of it being used…
(My uncle went with them and had a painting he had bought years ago with him, only to be told it was a fake. Apparently he argued with them for a long time about it.)
You know when there’s a reporter at the scene of an accident, and they find somebody who’s fairly distraught waiting to see if their friends and relatives are alive, or whatever, and the reporter asks them how they’re feeling? I’d like to see a clip of somebody smacking the reporter. That’d be fun to watch.
I’m sure Candid Camera has some really good outtakes we’ll never see. I imagine they’ve made some real hotheads out of pulling a practical joke on the wrong person who’s either already having a bad day, has no sense of humor, a propensity for using violence at the slightest provocstion, etc. I must say that some of the things I’ve seen them do on this show would make me absolutely livid and say/do things that would be unfit for airing on network TV.
Or “…I would value this to be between $10,000 and $15,000…but unfortunately it has a tiny tiny dot on the bottom. See? This dot right here? Because of this tiny dot, this vase is only about $200.” To see the person’s face light up and then fall and quite possibly explode in anger would be priceless.
I would love to see some Muppets outtakes. I’m sure the muppeteers must have blown their lines from time to time and ended up swearing on camera. It would be hilarious to see Fozzy or Gonzo (or even Elmo) throwing around some colorful metaphors.
They’ll never show them though. Parents would probably get upset.
Any Mel Brooks film, especially if it has Harvey Korman in it. That guy gets cracked up pretty easily, and he drags the rest of the cast into a laugh-fest.
Apparently, there were moments that Mel Gibson goofed around to break the emotional tension, like putting a clown nose on Maia Morgenstein (sp?) while she was in full Mother Mary garb.
The Muppets From Space DVD has a bunch of Muppet Outtakes, and they’re all pretty funny. But no profanity. The Muppeteers tend to get so into character that they stay in character even through the mistakes. They did the same at the end of several episodes of Muppet’s Tonight. There might of course be some that are withheld with profanity, but I’m sure it would find its way out onto the net.
If you want to here childhood idols cursing, look around for the Thundercats outtakes that are on the net somewhere. I don’t remember the link, but I’ve got them on my PC, and they are quite humorous.
You have to imagine that Queer Eye for the Straight Guy has some great outtakes. I mean, they get away with airing a whole lot of risque commentary, but still… I’m sure there’s more going on than we see.
There was something similar to this once (and I for some reason want to say it involved Geraldo Rivera for some reason.) It involved a real honest-to-Gawd unused Woodstock ticket (possibly the ONLY ONE EVER!), which was perforated with three tabs - one to be torn off for each of the three days of the festival. Anyway Geraldo picks it up and says “wow, can we get a close-up of this?” riiiiiiip. He’s left holding two pieces of now-worthless ticket.
Re: swearing outtakes of children’s shows. There was quite a clip going around in the early days of this board involving The New Zoo Revue. (Freddie the Frog specificly, I think.) You might be able to track it down with some Googling.
I too would love to see the newsperson slapped, or at least have their sanity questioned.
