Over-burning a CD??

I have bought some CD-R’s from Radio Shack, and the box says that the maximum burn speed is 8x. Well, my CD-writer burns at 12x, so what happens if i try to write the CD at this speed? Will it work? Will it screw up? Will it melt? lol

Thanks,
Conti

Whatever software you’re using will allow you to set a write speed, and you’ll need to set for 8x. However, the faster you attempt to write, the greater your chances of having an error, especially if you have an older PC (like around a 450mHz or slower). 6x would be a better choice - the copy will take a little longer - maybe 20 mins or so total - but you’ll be less likely to waste a disc.

FYI, overburning has nothing to do with this. Overburning refers to a technique to burn more than 650mb of data onto a 650mb disk, by omitting the lead-out tracks.

The CD will burst into flames!!
In practical terms most 8x CD’s will typically burn fine at 12X. They do for me anyway.

Ditto astro’s post. There shouldn’t be any problems, but if you start burning coasters, that’s quite possibly your problem.
