Over did it at training: is this muscle pain normal?

Man, did I ever go overboard. I haven’t excercised in several months, I’m just getting used to my new schedule with work and school, and all the other things I have to do, that I hadn’t found time to fit in my work out yet. I also haven’t gone to training with my MA group mostly on acocunt of the weather.

However this weekend there was an event with my MA group that I went to, and I think I put too much strain on my body. I was going full speed for the majority of the 8 hours I was there. I didn’t feel bad, until the end of the day when my legs were starting to scream “What the hell are you thinking?”

By the time I got home the pain was so bad that I was actually considering staying on the couch rather than walk to the bed so as to avoid the pain. I got off work yesterday and I was feeling better, the pain was there, but it wasn’t as bad. Today however, I woke up and it’s gettign worse! Every muscle in my body feels like it’s been charlie horsed. EVERY MUSCLE. My shoulders feel like it’s 1994 and it’s my birthday and the ENTIRE middle school has lined up to give me my birthday punches. I can’t close my hands, it’s like I have carpel tunnel.

Is this normal after overdoing it on a workout? Will I feel better soon? I really don’t want to take off work again.

I don’t know what exercise you were doing (what is MA?), but a one-off sports massage might be the order of the day here. If you can get to a gym, or elsewhere where there is a qualified masseuse it can get you back on your feet and walking around after overdoing things; shouldn’t be too expensive either.

MA = MArtial Arts. Hmm, a massage, that sounds good. Hoepfully I can go after work today. I just hope I make it through the day.

You know, the same thing happened to me. I used to train in Kung Fu, typical class was about two hours long. One time I went to a Kung-Fu weekend, where we trained all day, like you did; literally couldn’t walk on Monday morning! I went to the masseuse then and it did the buisness.

I second a massage. (Third? Fourth? eh)

Anyhow, legs are one of those muscles, for me, that take days to recover. I can literally be walking gingerly for a whole week. Kind of hard to fully rest them if you have to walk around all day.

If your pain doesn’t get better or gets worse, and or your urine turns dark or dramaticly decreases, go see your doctor.
Rhabdomyolysis can happen after over-exercising.
Its not common, but does happen.

Assuming you are in good health and just overdid it, there is a cure for the muscle pain. This sounds counterintuitive but it really works. Go out and work those muscles again, as hard as you possibly can without going totally overboard. In other words, go out and do it again. The massage will probably be helpful but just resting them and letting them ache will prolong the pain. You will be suprised at how good you feel after you give it another go.

Oh crap now I’m worried. Haven’t had to go to the bathroom yet but I’ll check next time I do.
