Over-moderated? In the six months I’ve been here, I’ve averaged about seven posts a day, which is reasonably prolific. Admittedly I’m not a particularly controversial poster, but during that time I’ve been mildly reprimanded twice {both times for stupid drive-bys in the wrong forums}, had one thread moved {and that was after a mod asked if I’d like to have it moved}, and had an admin get pissy back after I got pissy at him {we both apologised}. This is hardly being crushed under the iron heel of despotism. The reasons for why “Poster X has been banned” threads in ATMB have already been discussed, but it’s instructive to view the latest head on the wall to see just how repeatedly stupid and obnoxious you can be and still get cut slack before you’re actually banned.
{Checks watch anxiously} Not like catsix to be late for one of these threads.

My dollar is my vote, and I vote for a forum free from the petty restrictions of “having something intelligent to say” and “treating people with a basic amount of respect” and “not advocating anything illegal” and “not being a total choad.”

And this guy is like this about everything! We were talking about politics the other day, and he actually said, get this, “While I disagree with you, you do raise some excellent points that I’ll need to consider.” The nerve! Being moderate like that, right in front of me! Fuck that noise. I’m not hanging out with that guy any more. In fact, I hate him. He’s scum. Sure, we’ve been buddies since 2nd grade, but next time I see him, I’m giving him the beat down of his life. Over-moderate motherfucker.

I never had a problem paying to be on here, really. I like this board.
But, I’ve noticed time and again, that anytime someone criticizes the way things are run, they get piled on, insulted, etc. You have reasonable points, and I don’t think I’m the only one who agrees with a lot of what you said.
The only part of the OP that I agree with is wishing mods wouldn’t close threads solely because they feel the subject has run its course and/or is getting off-topic. I’d prefer they didn’t do this.
I suggest you give him the blowjob of his life and THEN give him the beatdown of his life. The extreme juxtaposition of the two activities should offset his generally moderate actions. Plus it shows just what lengths you’re willing to go to in order to demonstrate the proper way to enjoy life’s opportunities for excess. Let it not be said that you chastise the moderate in a moderate manner.
It is my opinion that you haven’t been around here long enough to gain the appropriate perspective on why many things are the way they are at the SDMB.
Sometimes threads are posted in the wrong forum. And each forum has its own posting style and in many cases, unique rules. This is a good thing. Often, a thread will start moving in a direction that makes it appropriate for another forum, at which point it will be moved. OPers generally don’t post “I’m not sure if this is where this thread belongs” because they fear mod intervention. In general, they do it out of concern for the rules of the board and a measure of respect for their fellow posters.
You probably missed the whole controversy over music copying and whatnot. The administration decided there shouldn’t be any talk of copying copyrighted material, as it might expose the Reader to legal liability. It’s a quirky rule, I’ll admit. But there’s justification for it.
As has been stated, this is to satisfy the inevitable “Why was Poster X banned?” threads that would pop up in the Pit, ATMB and elsewhere. It’s not the Internet equivalent of a public hanging for the sake of deterrence.
In light of all this, I’d urge you to reconsider. The mods and admins do a great job here of keeping the discussion civil, organized and on track, which is more than I can say for many boards out there.
