why are moderators so strict?

i just dont see it. i understand wanting a nice community, but why the threats of getting kicked of for simply posting and asking why a thred was closed? i think thats a bit extreme and cheap.

Because we care. Some of you kids just need a little tough love, that’s all.

You’ll thank us later.

Take a deep breath.

Now let it out slowly.

OK?

Now pay attention.

This is moderately large board with a lot of rambunctious posters, many of them with prickly personalities and nearly all of them firmly persuaded that they are RIGHT on whatever issue they comment upon.

In the midst of this unruly mob, there is one Forum that has been explicitly set aside for the sole purpose of providing factual answers to questions–with specific guidelines on the sort of questions that may not be considered appropriate.

You initiated, not one, but three separate threads that were clear violations of the rules for that Forum, and rather than politely (and privately) asking where you might have erred, you made a point of putting a snide, Moderator-bashing comment into the title of one of those threads.

It really is not that difficult to figure out why you have been slapped down, if you take the time to look. You can even get the answers to your questions regarding board protocol by reading the sticky threads at the beginning of the General Questions and About This Message Board Fora.

This can be a friendly place, but with dozens of new posters joining all the time, the moderators do not have the time or energy to greet each newcomer and gently walk each one through their first few days. We sort of expect that if you’re bright enough to join up, you’re bright enough to figure it out on your own.

Good luck.

It’s to give people something to rebel against. No, hear me out. Quite a few people have to feel that they’re rebels and that someone is keeping them down. By appointing moderators, the Board-runners are ensuring that all posters will have self-esteem boosts from being repressed by the MAN and thus, being a cool rebel. Mods, on the other hand, get to bitch about how dumb and rebellious their posters are and thus feel persecuted and rebel in their own way, by closing threads.

See, it all works out.

Man, that GMRyujin sure is a dumb newbie. Maybe we should ban his ass.

Kinda like that?

thanks…listen, i made three posts because i gotthree web site not responding errors so i actually had no idea i posted three times. itwasnt meant to be annoying, purely an accident. as faras moderator bashing, well i wasnt. i just wanted someone to look and tell me why he was rude and why a question about drugs could not be posted in a general questios area…

LONG DRAMATIC SHOT

GMRYUJIN:
Damn you Coldfirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre!

Sheesh! Here we go again with the same poster and the same crap. Can someone please mail this person a clue.

Y’know, you just might not be getting it.

While you were so eager to get that response back here (and in such a hurry that your fingers kept missing the Shift Key, the Enter key at the beginning of paragraphs, and even the Spacebar), you were missing the opportunity to actually go the the ATMB Forum and read the FAQ - guidelines for posting at the SDMB thread that actually answers most of your questions.

Again: Good luck.

Oooh! We should do that “camera moves in while it zooms out at the same time” thing right here!

I was hoping for a Sam Raimi Shakycam with patented Bruce Campbell Freakout Face on the assist.

Well, but, as has been pointed out, the BBQ pit is the correct place to question specific moderator actions. As for why your question about drugs was locked in the first place, you need to be really careful when you’re talking about actions that are illegal. The board doesn’t want to encourage somebody to break the law, and it doesn’t want to be held responsible in case somebody breaks the law because of something he or she read on here. And, for what it’s worth, I don’t think Bibliophage was all that rude to you. He just said, “Hey, we don’t talk about stuff like that here, and you’ve been around since October so you should know that, so I’m closing this thread.”

Of course, this is just my understanding of the situation, and if I’ve misstated anything, I hope either another poster or a moderator will correct me.

It’s all part of the Nazi Code … Ve haf vays of makeen yoo whine.

I’ve actually been an admin on a forum as big as this one, and sometimes you just have to be tough with people. They won’t get the message otherwise.

eh, I don’t like sending large files…

Have you even READ any of Cecil’s articles? Fools are not suffered gladly around here.

It doesn’t matter what you wanted from that thread. Any thread about the way this board is run (questions, bitching, dirty jokes, compliments, anything) goes in the Pit. Unless I’m very mistaken, it says so right there at the Forums screen. There’s a linky-link to each forum, along with a description of what each forum is for.

As for why your threads were closed, there are multiple reasons. Firstly, you were asking for other people’s personal preferences and opinions, not factual stuff that can be proven or disproven. Clearly not a GQ thread, regardless of the subject matter. That’s something you really ought to have picked up on in four months. Secondly, discussion of illegal activities is forbidden, something else most folks pick up on within four months.

Finally, I didn’t see anything rude in the post locking that thread, although the post had been edited by the time I saw it. I’m no mod, but I can hazard a guess as to why you’re on notice. You were told you were doing things that aren’t allowed and making extra work for the moderators. You continued to do what they’d just told you not to, I can only assume deliberately. Deliberately continuing to do something you’ve been asked not to do is generally considered jerkish behavior, and surely you know the one really big rule around here.

I think the mod’s here are pussycats compared to some of the overmoderated boards I’ve been on. (Granted, I have recently read Maus, so there is the obligatory hidden Nazi reference in pussycat :)).

I’m was on one board where posts just disappear when mods feel you’ve gotten out of hand - or even if you are just replying to part of a thread that’s gotten out of hand.

I don’t post there much anymore, because there is nothing like carefully wording a response to someone, hitting submit, seeing it post, then two hours later discover it and several other posts have been deleted in some odd moderator tizzy.

I’ve also done unmoderated boards - and they really aren’t worth the bother. When nobody gets called on poor behavior, when you are allowed to run amuck on the board, plagerize and lie - what’s the purpose?

Bindrah, you might want to find a board (there are lots out there) where the moderating style is more attuned to you.

What an abject lie.

I’m still around, aren’t I?

It is really quite simple; if the moderators were not so strict, the board would quickly be overrun by complete fucking idiots posting inappropriate topics in the wrong forums, although on the plus side, there would be no need for the complete fucking idiots to post multiple whiny rants, as the inappropriate topics in the wrong forums would not get closed because the moderators were not so strict.
