I'm gonna get banned on a different board

My husband is a member of another message board, and I have tried to be a member there, too. Problem is, they’re SO FREAKING ANNOYING!!! I don’t think I will ever complain about this boad again; I have always appreciated it here, but I haven’t had a lot of experience with how bad it is in the rest of the internet. They have moderators there, but they don’t DO ANYTHING. One of the moderators is one of the worst offenders for encouraging idiots to act stupid.

LMAO
Oh my everloving god, the flirt threads. Six friggin’ forums full of flirt threads. “Would you do the poster above you?” “What positions do you like?” “Who’s your secret crush?” Sorry, I should frak up my grammar and spelling to make it more realistic.

LMAO
It’s the debate threads that will get me banned, though. Imagine the worst trolls we’ve had here; now imagine trying to have debates with them about serious issues, and having moderators encouraging the trolls by telling them they’re great debaters, and everybody loves them, and don’t worry, we can all understand you just fine (in spite of the fact that their posts look like they were typed by an epileptic cat and are about as on-topic as you would expect from Shaky Fluffy).

LMAO

And they post glurge in the debate threads, and people ENCOURAGE THEM!!! AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

LMAO
My husband is a very bright, very politically astute person who likes to have long, involved discussions with me about everything under the sun, but he doesn’t like to debate on the internet. These people are a-okay in his books. I’ve really tried to participate in his board, but I can’t stand it. I’m not getting anything out of it except frustrated.

LMAO

Yes, that’s about how often they post LMAO there. Approximately every fifth word.

Okay, I think I’m gonna be okay now. Just had to get that off my chest. I don’t think I’ll go back there. It won’t end well.

Think of it as a badge of honor, featherlou. Getting banned from boards like those is the same thing as being told that you’re an independent, well-adjusted person with better places to hang out in tonight than on the computer by your bed in your mom’s basement.

I’ve been banned from three right wing messageboards over the years after getting flamed for merely posting my opinion. There’s nothing quite like getting flamed on a right wing messageboard. They’ll scream at you in all caps, but they forget that the caps lock key is on and hit the shift key at the beginning of sentences. ("yOUR SO FUCKIN’ STUPID. i HOPE YOU DIE!!!) They’ll call you retarded, but misspell “illiterate.” Then when you point out that they misspelled a word, they’ll laugh at you for the way you spell “misspell”. I figure that I’ve gotten banned twice pretty soon after the moderator figures out that I spelled “misspell” right and made him look like an idiot. Sigh, who would have thought that the Michigan Militia had wifi access?

So buck up, lil’ doper. Some messageboards are out there just so we can feel better about ourselves.

Yeh, in groups like that, anyone attempting to bring sense and civility to the discussion will get hounded out as a trouble-maker.

I’ve known one poster to close three or four different spirtual discussion boards just by constantly posting quotations – especially meaningless drivel. Several of us asked her not to, but she was bound and determined to do it. These were boards without moderators except for one that was moderated by one of her friends.

She did manage to have the last word on all of those boards. She could be a very interesting person when she opened up and talked about herself.

Sorry, featherlou, that it’s such a bad experience. I’m pretty cloistered as things go on the Net; Here, and a few special interest sites, slower, but nice as far as manners go.

You’re making me curious, though; what specifically is ban-able in the Carnival Tilt-a-Whirl Funhouse of the forums yer in there?

Muy sympathy for your yikes and troubles.

Oh, the manners there are nice enough. In fact, they’re a little too nice - they could use a little jackbooted thuggery* to tune them up properly.

Oops, was that my out-loud voice?

I think what would get me banned there is telling their pet borderline trolls exactly what I think of them in the “no personal insults” area. I’m almost at the point that it would be worth it.

*I mean “jackbooted thuggery” in the nicest way.

Why am I picturing featherlou with a large pile of varied bribes to satiate the SDMB moderators, calling out in a coaxing voice “You want the treat? You want it? Ok, then go KEEEL those posters! That’s a good mod, go get 'em!” :stuck_out_tongue:

Sigh…I post on a fishing related board that seems to be populated with very nice folks…who also hold bizarre knee-jerk ultra right wing positions on things like environmental issues (which blows my mind-clean water equals more fish you freaking morons) where I could easily get banned on a bad day, but I just take that board for what it’s worth to me and stay away from the rest of the stuff.

There has to be a reason you keep going back, right?

This may well be the funniest thing I’ve read in my entire life! I keep picturing poor Shaky Fluffy on top of the keyboard… Why, yes, thanks, I do already have my one-way ticket to hell.

I used to post on a law-related board, but it got so frustrating. The first couple posts in a thread would be on-topic, but from there it would evolve into name-calling, insults, and third-grade playground behavior (apologies to the third-graders). This place, with an emphasis on spelling, grammar, civility and moderation was a breath of fresh air.

I don’t know if I would do the poster above me. Are you a dude? That would be a dealbreaker.

What if you post that you would do the poster above you but then you actually post and it turns out to be a simulpost? Do you still have to do the poster that’s technically above you? Are you allowed to back out if the poster above you before you press the submit button is not the same after you press the submit button? Is it the intent that counts, or the actual gesture? Hm? Hm?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Agreed. I laughed so hard the other people in the study lounge (where I would be doing homework if I wasn’t on wasting even more times online) looked at me funny. I loved the mental image of the epileptic cat on the keyboard as the denizens of this some low-brow L their collective AO at it. Comedic gold. That or I need some sleep. Probably a fusion of the two.

Correction from my above post. I definitely need some sleep.
He he he, Shaky Fluffy.

You want I should send my cousin Vinnie over dere? He’s been kind of restless lately.

I was a power-poster on a feminist/lesbian board for a couple of years prior to discovering the Dope. Over the past year or so I have tried to get established there again, but I simply can’t bear it. My favorite inadvertant bruhaha came from a woman who I carefully and manually quoted (no quoting tools in their code) as part of a new OP to avoid taking over the original thread with a tangent. I quoted this woman and many others and responded to them all, asked them some questions in the interest of starting a new conversation, etc.

This lady WENT OFF on me, basically saying “How dare you quote me! You patriarchy puppet! You are not honoring my personal space!”. It wasn’t even an out of context quote at all. I’d basically cut and paste a couple of paragraphs surrounding one particularly :dubious: statement.

As someone who is happily owned by wonderful and truly epileptic cat, the image I can’t get out of my head is trying to clean seizure urine out of the keyboard with Q-tips.

I’ve got the same problem with one of the firearm boards I frequent- it’s supposedly devoted to historic & collectible firearms, but the posters there are increasingly Redneck, Conservative, as well as both Ultra-Patriotic and Paranoid. Indeed, I was copping an inordinate amount of Flak over there about Australia’s “Communist” gun laws, and how it was clearly my fault that we had such strict gun laws.

Often, they’d say I should move to the US where I could own whatever I liked. “Sure”, I’d say. “Who’s going to help me get a green card and a job?”

Silence.

There was a very strict “No swearing at all” rule that bothered me, too. I realise that it’s not appropriate to go around liberally using the Seven Words You Can’t Say On US TV on “family” messageboards, but a board devoted to the ownership and use of firearms generally precludes the presence of kids- certainly, any kid savvy enough to get an account at the site and know anything about guns would have heard most of the swear words in common use.

Finally, there was just too much “America Is The Greatest And Best Country In The World” going on- American guns were the best, they saved everyone’s ass in WWII, and every bill which suggested that maybe it shouldn’t be legal for eight year olds to own an AR-15 was seen as a Liberal Plot. Not a nice place at all.

Most of us jumped ship to a much better board (which is more like a Gentlemen’s Club in the traditional sense, with the virtual oak panelled walls, trophy animals on display, high backed leather chairs, and gentlemen smoking cigars, drinking brandy, and discussing Important Things), but after a bit more looking around on the net I’m starting to realise this place and Gunboards.com are probably two of the best forums on the internet, full stop.

Banana fana fofana Vinnie Vinnie Bodini…

Daniel

Sounds rather like the messageboard (no longer extant) associated with a certain feminst magazine. I was not banned, but imagine a messageboard consisting of 90% trolls.

And there is another messageboard from which I was recently banned for dissenting from the anti-vaccination groupthink. My gosh, those people are an annoying cross between ignorant fanaticism and breath-taking gullibility. And the moderator had an annoying habit of deleting posts that made any effective pro-vaccination points.

Some people should not be allowed access to the Internet.

Then I guess double-posting would be masturbation.

Regards,
Shodan

More than two posts, and you’re just playing with yourself.

So, Lynn, does your cousin Vinnie work cheap, hypothetically?

I got banned from a parenting board once. Why I was there, I’m not sure. I hate the subject of parenting, even though I am a loving parent. I blame my sister. Anyway, I had no respect for most of the other posters (many of whom would accuse people of flaming any time they disagreed and were pumping out young’uns they couldn’t come close to affording) or mods. But, alas, I was addicted and I had some people I liked there, people I still post with privately many years later, so I had to get myself banned. They were slowly going out of business so there was one mod left. I was trying and trying to get myself banned and I finally posted that she was a fucking shitty mod (and there was NO swearing in case the little ones were looking on) and that was that.
