A few months back, I bought a “gaming” system to keep me entertained before returning to the US. I’ve grown to like it so much, though, that I’m considering keeping it!
However, the system is heavily overclocked. From the processers to the video card, I believe. I actually don’t know a whole lot about computers, but I was curious as to how this could affect my transportation of the system back home.
If I dismantle this machine to rebuild at home, will that wipe any of the settings used to overclock it? I don’t want to bother bringing it back home if I’m going to lose that performance edge.
Also, how much would this thing be worth if I decide to sell it? It’s been used for approximately 3 months:
Help from you gurus would be certainly appreciated.
It shouldn’t be a problem. The cpu overclocking settings are configured on the motherboard through the setup menu but should not be affected by shipping. Similarly the graphics overclocking is presumably controlled by a utility supplied with the card. If you are worried you can enter setup and write down all the settings before you start. Do be careful if you decide to remove that rather large heat sink as the need some care when fitting together again to get good thermal contact between it and the processor, otherwise your cpu may crash & burn - literally.
Thats not a huge overclock for the CPU, as its a very overclockable CPU model. It should be fine unless the person did something silly with voltages. And according to that link, the videocard isnt even overclocked.
Dont worry about losing the settings though, the difference in real world performance from that is really pretty minor - CPU generally makes much less difference to game performance than your videocard.
