We have a craftsman 1/4 horsepower remote door opener for the garage. A couple of days ago the sprocket snapped off. We ordered the parts from sears and replaced the worm gear and the spindle that has the sprocket and gear.
After re assembly, I plugged in the cord and hit the button for opening or closing the door, the shuttle that connects up to the door moved several inches before abruptly stopping, and we get a blinking yellow light on the back of the unit , plus the switch on the wall.
I am assuming that the door electric eyes believe that they have caught something in the infra red beam, but when we adjusted the door rail mounted sensors, the jerky motion still occurs.
I am at a loss right now as to what to eliminate for faults. There is three sets of wires that go into the back of the unit, two are from the electric eyes ,and the one set of wires would be from the main switch on the wall.
The sensors on the rails were offset from each other , but now they are even, the only thing I can think of is that while they are the same height, one or both may be at a slight angle.
This may have nothing to do with it, but when I had a stripped gear in one, it turned out that there was a problem with the door itself binding as it went up the rails. I had to get the door replaced or the new gear would have stripped out as well.
Does the door go up and down easily if you do it manually?
The electric eye should not prevent the door from opening; only closing.
On some units you can override the sensors by holding down the wall unit button.
If the door is closed and it won’t open, it should not be because the electric eye thinks something is in the way.
The door should raise and lower easily manually when you disengage the shuttle (using the emergency pull cord). Does it? If not, make sure the spring is not broken (depending on your spring type). If the door operates manually, try adjusting the strength of the pull; there should be a couple of adjusting screws on the back of the unit to adjust raising and lowering strengths.
It’s always difficult for me to troubleshoot over the internet…I wish I were better at it.
When we tried , the shuttle was at the full open position so pushing the button should have made motions for the door to close , and it attempted to , just to stop a couple of inches into travel.
I’ll look into that tommorow.
As I mentioned previously, the door shuttle is in the open position so that the garage door is fully open
When disconnected from the shuttle , the door opens and closes normally with no binding.
I will check those out, my main concern is that I have wires hooked up wrong or the electric eyes, however I will check those screws out first before doing anything else
Thank you for your help anyways, you may lead me to that d’oh moment that I should have checked
