Oxydol same as Hydrogen Peroxide?

This is a question for some of you residing in Japan.

I’ve been trying to find Hydrogen Peroxide (かさんかすいそ) which all my teachers say I should be able to find at a drug store like Drug Fuji or something, but I’ve checked two drugs stores and a kusiri and no one has it. One guy recommended me Oxydol, so I got a little bottle.

It seems to be a diluted mixture of hydrogen peroxide, but I’m not entirely positive. I want to use this to clean my ears, as was suggested in a previous thread in MPSIMS, but I’m obviously not just going to dump random unknown chemicals into my ears.

Thanks for the help

Round these parts, Oxydol is a laundry detergent.
However, Oxydol is also a synonym for hydrogen peroxide in some parts of the world.

You want the clear liquid in the brown bottle, 3%, that doesn’t have pictures of gleaming clothes and happy washing machines on it.

If the bottle doesn’t plainly say 3%, in some language you can understand, test a drop on your finger before pouring it in your ear. 30% hydrogen peroxide will cause rapid skin bleaching and a burning sensation. 3% won’t. I imagine that it would hurt a LOT in your ear.

It’d be best to talk to the pharmacist at the store where you found it.

thanks, I did, but he was hard to understand (my japanese is kinda shit). He said it was for cuts and stuff. It’s definitely NOT laundry detergent, and it’s definitely not 30% h2o2 cause I gave it a good sniff and it didn’t smell too bad, so I put some on my hand, nothing. THen I chickened out (they’re my EARS, I like my ears) and decided to ask on the Dope. It’s in a white bottle, pretty small (maybe 400ml), and I didn’t see a percentage anywhere but I’ll look again tonight when I get home from work. From my research it seemed to be a synonym, but again, the chickening out (really, i like my ears, they’re quite convenient to have)

30% H2O2 is an industrial chemical and I suspect it isn’t available over the counter anywhere in the world.

That’s a typical use for 3% hydrogen peroxide.

My understanding is the bottle needs to be opaque - I don’t believe the actually color matters so long as light can’t get through.

yea, in america the bottles are usually brown, but it’s all to do with light damaging the chemical. SO long as it’s opaque it’s fine. Was just hoping someone had experience with it. I’ll try the water-and-peroxide solution in my ears tonight, as other posters have suggested it’s a good way to clean out ones ears

ETA: all in accordance with this thread in case anyone’s curious

FWIW, a Japanese friend of mine is of the opinion that Oxydol in Japan is the same thing sold in drug stores as hydrogen peroxide here.

Yes in Japan Hydrogen Peroxide is called オキシドル

I also thought they didn’t have backing soda in Japan when I first came, but they do, they just don’t call it backing soda. It is 2 kanji that I can never remember until I see it and it is usually sold next to the flower for making tempura.

Google says for baking soda: 重曹 and 過酸化水素 for hydrogen peroxide
