You know what I couldn’t get over? That the Packers’ coach (I don’t know his name) didn’t challenge the turnover on the punt. Sure it was a little ambiguous, but they were down by 14, half way through the 2nd quarter, on the 20 yard line, in a playoff game. I would have challenged.
I don’t think that instant replay can change possesion of the ball. I remember from an earlier game where a team challenged an incomplete pass/fumble ruling. They overturned the call on the field, but the only thing that changed was the spot of the ball, not possesion. Pretty silly rule, if you ask me.
St. Urho, A challenge can change possession, and a challenge could have changed possession on the punt recovery. In the play you saw, the ball was probably whistled dead when the receiver went down. Nothing that occurs after a whistle can be challenged because the play is then over. Sometimes a “quick” whistle can blow a play dead too soon, and sometimes teams get screwed because of it, but that’s the way it has to be if you want the players to stop playing when the whistle blows.
Thanks.
No problem. Sherman blew it, he should have thrown the bean bag. The Packers would have won the challenge. The ball clearly bounced off a Falcon player’s helmet. That play led to the Falcons’ third touchdown, and that was when the Packers seemed to quit a little bit. If Sherman had been a little more on top of things it could have been a different game.
Sherman said in the post-game media blitz thing that at the time, something to the effect of his men upstairs didn’t have a shot of the play to review to see if it was all that close at all. And by the time any of them did, the ball had been snapped again, so the whole issue was moot from a challenge perspective.
Eh, if he had a set of balls, he would have challenged anyway, whether they had the clip to review or not. The Playoffs is not the time to be a giant pussy.
Nice try, jarbabyj, but tell the truth…
When, exactly, during the Falcons-Packers game did you experience your first orgasm of the day?
Sua
I was hosting a party. I didn’t see it as I fought with men and women when I required the television to be off.
I’ll admit I’m thrilled the Packers lost and it was joyful to see Brett take a knee in the highlights, but neener neenering the day after (particularly from a Vikes or Bears fan, whose teams sucked) is a bit nutty.
Call it the new jarbaby I guess
I’m shocked and horrified. At NYCDope, I caught a quick shot of Brett Favre standing on the sidelines, looking like he was crying, and said, “Somewhere, jarbaby is yelling with joy.”
I am so disillusioned.
Please. I was filled with joy, trust it…but I didn’t rub it in Packer fans faces the day after. Because having my team finish with such a horrible record would have given them too much ammunition to fire back with.
I haven’t gone soft on hating the Packers, please don’t think that.
jarbabyj, where is your sig!!!
I am not in a good mood!!
Oh! Here it is…and by golly, I was right!
Maybe we’ve heard the last from those bleating sheep about how special those packer fans are. Used to live around there. I heard they killed Bart Starr’s dog when he was havng a bad season (coaching).
It wasn’t Bart Starr, it was Dan Devine.
Not to defend Madden in the least…
I didn’t hear the post game comment by Madden and agree that it makes him sound like an ass. But to be fair, I did hear him comment during the pre-game when the other announcer was going on about the conditions affecting Atlanta. Madden made a comment that during the warm-ups the Packers kept stopping to put on and take off extra warm-up jackets while the Falcons just went out in their normal playing attire and did their warm-ups.
But I agree that if he were so sure of that determining the result, he should have called his bookie.
GO FALCONS!!!
Thanks for the info…poor Devine, I kinda liked him.
While I would hate for a little thing like the truth to get in the way of a good old fashioned football argument, this story needs to be put to rest. While true that Devine’s dog was shot, it wasn’t due to coaching decisions. Current Packer president Bob Harlan mentions this in an article on Devine’s death:
I guess the end result is the same, but slightly different M.O.
Carry on
oops.
It was a real bummer of a sports weekend for me.
First, the Packers got beat on Saturday.
Then on Sunday, I went to Ann Arbor with the hope that the Michigan Wolverine women’s basketball team would cheer me up with a win against Illinois.
No such luck. Illini 89-Wolverines 57.
