No, most of us forked over $4.95 in March and April for “Charter Membership.” After that, the price became $14.95. Still a bargain.
The money we paid was not necessarily for the best tech out there but for the right to participate on the board. We think that’s worth it. There are also hopes that the tech will improve, but for the most part I’m satisfied.

Bottom Line. By charging folks to be members of your community (online culture) you’re guilty of selective speech (more on this in the sentences to follow), so much for open minded thought and battling the evil forces of ignorance with bias thought on the boards.

$14.95 maybe steep for someone in Africa or India, there’s not much of a cultural view from developing nations on these boards. This is evident from the lack of response from my “African Philosophy post”. You may get people of diffrent cultures on your boards if you lower or better yet be done with the payment. The United States is not the spot light of the world. Maybe to you it is, but ignorance is breeding everywhere

Well, first of all, perhaps I’m being a cultural imperialist or something, but I was under the assumption that most people in Africa and India couldn’t afford computers, or in some cases, had a problem getting uncensored 'Net access. Secondly, this board was free for something like four years, and if we didn’t get “cultural diversity” then, it’s doubtful we’ll suddenly get it now having been under the paid structure for something like a month.
As for the charity thing, well, I can’t necessarily speak for everyone, but I’d assume that this board would NOT be paid out of the “charity” budget…

Maybe there should be a think before you post policy here. It would be advantageous in the long and short run. The expensive hosting and bandwidth costs at SDMB is also explained by redundant posts such as this. It must be users like Blue Sky and his or her many posts that cause a tremendous drag on these message boards, and all of you have to foot the shared bill. Paying for other peoples dead posts sure would suck. Oh wait it’s happening already.
If you’re going to have selective speech, maybe there should be quality control viz. bandwidth wasting users are let go and not those with constructive criticism. You shouldn’t be graded by the ability of forking over $14.95 and accepted into a community that fights ignorance by so doing. To me that’s not a positve movement to the purpose of this board.

Also, as far as I’m aware, there’s not a huge population of internet users in Africa. I don’t remember any posters on the boards from Africa, even from my five years of experience on these boards BEFORE there was a charge to post on them. Correlation does not equal causation, and all that jazz.

I doubt many Africans or Indians run across the Chicago Readers webpage or Cecils columns. So by nature the board will attract people who are American or European. Paid subscriptions are a NEW DEVELOPMENT there has never been a strong African force on the boards. However once again we have blind donations to pay for members they are welcome to sign up for that.

Okay the second was a big NO NO. You’re saying African’s and Indians cannot even afford computers. I was in Tanzania and South Africa last Christmas and the Internet was flying at a whopping 1Mbit. Sure I was at my dad’s house. But out in Dar-Es-Salam, TZ and in Durban, SA there was dime a dozen Internet Cafes. So much for fighing ignorance. The western world may have invented the Internet but the entire world is using it and speak pretty darn good english, better english than many Americans I know.
