Pain in neck during sudden twist: WTF?

What’s up with that weird and painful shock you can get in your neck when you twist it suddenly? You know, that thing that feel like you bumped into a live wire?

I always assumed it was some kind of pinched nerve but I’m looking forward to the official answer. I’ve had a few of these neck shocks that were particularly painful and I had a fleeting panic that I was paralyzed until it subsided.

I’m not official, but everything I’ve heard about a similar experience (When I sneeze violently, I get huge pain running down both my arms) is that it’s usually going to be linked to some kind of pinched nerve - though it may not be pinched where you’re feeling the pain.

Painful? I think it’s one of the three greatest feelings in the world. You’re talking about the one where the elictricity radiates from your neck and sometimes down your arms, right? Maybe things are not right with me.

You like that feeling?? You’ll die happy if a heart attack takes you out.

Agreed. I’ve had that neck-pinch happen when turning my head to check for oncoming cars while changing lanes at 75MPH.

I too would like to know what it is, though. I experience brief, intense pain, and momentary blindness followed by a cramp and lingering pan for several minutes.

Not a good thing to have happen on the interstate.
