painting vinyl siding

We’ve recently recently added a small (10’x10’) room to our house, and I wanted to do the exterior with the same vinyl siding that’s used on the rest of our house. Problem is, the home improvement centers don’t carry that particular color in stock – they only have white (I need “wheat” color). I could special order it, but the minimum special order is a case. For the siding itself, I could do that (though I would be wasting a lot); but I also need a couple strips of J-channel and one strip of exterior corner trim, and I would have to buy an entire box of both. It would end up costing hundreds of dollars and I would only use a fraction of the material.

It dawned on me today that maybe I could buy what I need in white, and then have the paint store mix a color for me to match the rest of the house. So I wonder:

Will paint stick to vinyl siding without cracking/peeling? What kind of paint do I need to use?

I’d first check with local contractors who install vinyl siding. One of them may have some pieces on hand in the color you need, and would be glad to sell them to you.

Also, in the Minneapolis area, we have a store that buys leftover materials from contractors and offers them for sale. (You can get some real bargains there.) You might check to see if there is something similar in your area.

I’d do both of these before trying to paint vinyl siding. It might be hard to paint the siding, and you’d have to repaint it periodically. (A main attraction of vinyl siding is that you DON’T have to paint it every few years!) Also, I’d think it would be hard to get a paint to match that closely, and to stay matched as it aged.
