Where can I buy a single piece of vinyl siding?

New (and occasionally bewildered) homeowner here. I have a golf-ball sized hole that appeared in my vinyl siding. Not sure how it got there, but I want to patch it before any water damage occurs (for now, it’s patched with “The Force,” i.e. duct tape).

It seems that I need to buy a small piece of siding and replace the damaged part. (though if there are any products that I can just slap/screw/nail on as a patch, please let me know.) Trouble is, I don’t know how to buy just a small piece of siding. Home depot had a “siding” aisle, with no siding in it. Everything I see online just seems like they are referring me to contractors, but I’d like to do this myself if possible (and it certainly seems simple enough).

It doesn’t even have to match that well, since it’s a small piece, in a mostly inconspicuous place, and my house is not a fancy color, just white. As long as it’s the right side and close to white, I’ll be happy.

A few years ago we enclosed a small porch on our house, and I wanted to use siding to match the rest of the house. So I was looking for more siding than you are, but less than a whole box.

At my local Lowe’s, they did sell vinyl siding in single pieces, but only in the most common colors: white, and I think maybe beige or tan. Anything else had to be special ordered in a whole box.

Since I needed about 20 pieces anyway, I just ordered a box and I still have most of the rest of it sitting in my garage. I guess if we ever get a tornado I’ll be all set for repairs.

For you, since your area is so small, maybe you can buy a single white piece and paint it the color you need? Some kind of paint that will bond to the vinyl without chipping away.

I had to patch a small area in the aluminum siding on my house. Less than one piece and some corner pieces. I found a siding company in the phone book and gave them a call. They actually had a lot more stuff thatn the local big box store and were willing to sell me a single peice and the corners I needed.

Sounds like a good idea to me! Give them a call.

Habitat for Humanity has a lot of “Restore” outlets that sell donated items, usually small leftover amounts of building supplies. Look to see if one is in your area.

You can also check out the ads on your local CraigsList. Search under “For Sale” and then under “Materials”.

You could try calling local contractors and asking them if they have an appropriate piece - some of the guys I work with would be willing to give you a small piece like that as a gesture of goodwill, hoping that when you do need a full contractor you’ll remember them.

Of course, some contractors are jerks, too, so yeah, YMMV.
