Of the various peoples living within Israel proper (i.e. not Gaza Strip), do all people (Jews, Arabs, other ethnic groups) have the same and equal rights, such as voting/healthcare etc.
I assume that the law is different for various groups, or is it more like the American deep South in the 1960’s where although the law was meant to treat people equally, blacks still got a raw deal from the racist courts?
If ‘Palestinians’ are treated differently, how does the law differentiate between ‘Palestinian/Arabs’ and Jews? Skin colour, Religion?
Can a person considering himself/herself Palestinian hold office in the Israeli govt? Are there any serving now?
I’m not certain about issues such as healthcare, but as far as voting goes, all citizens (which include Israeli Arabs) can vote and be elected to the Kenesset. In fact, there are several Israeli Arab members of the Kenesset.
An area where Jewish and Israeli citizens are treated differently in Israel is military service. Jewish citizens generally must serve in the military, Arabs are not allowed to do so. (There are exceptions to both rules.)
In most other respects, however, Jews and Arabs are treated identically by the government, at least in theory. Arab citizens often complain of discrimination in private life in employment, etc…
