Palin Resigns as Gov? WTF?

“Well, gentlemen,…you won’t have Palin to kick around any more.”

Maybe David Frost can interview her.

I think this comment and link in the DailyKos discussion could point to the most likely reasons:

http://www.adn.com/palin/story/852044.html

She sure did. And her remarks were word soup, making me think whatever happened, happened in a hurry. Because wouldn’t you prepare for something like this?

My guess is that her husband discovered an affair with someone she works with (maybe a lobbyist) and threatened her with divorce if she didn’t resign.

If she did it because she’s considering a run for President in 2012, then she’s doing it on her own, because no one in the Republican party would have let her resign mid-term. Or let her jabber on like she was late for a hair appointment and had to get the resignation speech out of the way first.

Honestly Gigo, none of those things sound damming enough to cause her to preemptively resign.

From what I could stand to watch of her announcement, that was the impression I got too. There’s another shoe about to be dropped and it’s a honkin’ big and muck-encrusted one, is my wild-ass guess.

From the transcript(which doesn’t exactly match the speech):
In fact, this decision comes after much consideration, and finally polling the most important people in my life - my children (where the count was unanimous… well, in response to asking: “Want me to make a positive difference and fight for ALL our children’s future from OUTSIDE the Governor’s office?” It was four “yes’s” and one “hell yeah!”

I wonder what the alternative option she offered her family was:
.…or continue making ridiculous moves to keep my name in the headlines-- that leave your schoolmates laughing at you–from INSIDE the governor’s office?

Palin, for whatever reason is very personable and my guess is can make a LOT of money elsewhere.

The fact is there is only so much of a window to make a lot of money, and my guess is she feels right now, is a good time to cash in. If she tries to cash in while governor that is bad. If she quits, she can always come back.

Of course, so were her remarks during the campaign.

I fear this too. For her to resign at the end of the month, when she has a year left to serve, seems very odd to me. I think she got short shrift from the media (they were certainly crawling all over Alaska after McCain named her his running mate, spreading all sorts of vicious rumors about Trig not being her son) and maybe she just couldn’t take the heat anymore. Or maybe they finally dug up something not quite kosher and she’s trying to get her family out of the spotlight. Either way, this just makes me shake my head in sorrow.

Palin and her political cohorts have been running a very disorganized interim effort to cash in on the support she got during the campaign and raise funds. It’s been the subject of commentary how she’s pissed off potential supporters and donors.

So maybe she realized that in order to run for President in '12 (and she’s got the hots for power, make no mistake about that) she can’t have the distraction of trying to govern a state. Plus yeah, there’s big money in running around to more attractive places giving speeches to the dimwits who admire and/or lust after her alleged hotness.

I doubt there’s any major scandal brewing that forced her out. Then again, I found it believable that Sanford was hiking the Appalachian Trail. :dubious:

So really, why do any of you care?

If she is planning on positioning for a Presidential run, I say great. Her presence will help keep the GOP primaries more entertaining as she is eviscerated by knives coming at her from angles that only your “friends” get.

If she is planning on maximizing her profitability while her fleeting fame still exists, also fine. The GOP may actually find someone of consequence to be their voice a small bit sooner. I won’t begrudge her for having the business acumen to know that her time to do is limited and that now is her peak profitability potential. A losing GOP primary wannabe won’t bring in the same cash.

If there is major muck, well why care about muck attached to one of so little import? Okay, the gossip mag factor. But really, why care? What is it about her that makes you so interested in her?

Unless there is a death in the family or some serious illness, is there ever a good reason to resign from office - especially in your 1st term?!
I mean, seriously…this will not look good on a resume even if you apply at McDonalds, let alone for a better job. Employers (and voters) don’t like to see people changing jobs or quitting for no particular reason.

As pathetically unqualified for higher office the woman is, she always at least seemed to have a grip on what it takes to climb up that ladder of success. Even she has to be aware this is not a wise move.

I have to agree - there is more behind this story and it is only a matter of time until it becomes public.

[li]She beloved by my political adversaries, so schadenfraude is especially sweet.[/li][li]She is a mouthpiece for policies I oppose, so her downfall weakens the opposition.[/li][li]Because it’s hard to look away from a train wreck.[/li][/ol]

My impression is that Palin knows what was coming from the email release. Even the mild stuff is bad for her. I do remember how disruptive was for her to constantly explain why she was constantly fighting against accusations of ethics violations. More than disruptive, her brain can shut down.

She has demonstrated how thin skinned she is, and going to another cycle of dealing with accusations of being more anti-science would lead to even more negative reactions among independents.

If the idea is to run in the future, it is better to just become a private person and avoid dealing with any ethical or scientific problems.

Okay, I get schadenfreude.
Two though. She self-parodies those policies. Her presence weakens the opposition more than her absence might.
Three. Yeah, I can’t help but watch too. But at least I’m ashamed of myself!

Will the Democrats be so insane as to nominate a no-name black man against a white war hero?

Were she to get the nomination, she would have a much better chance of being elected than I can comfortably admit.

Sure, but now there’s a link titled “‘WE’RE NOT RETREATING. WE’RE ADVANCING IN ANOTHER DIRECTION’…”, which may as well be titled “SPIN BABY SPIN”.

No. Palin’s political career is now over. The value of the Palin brand turned on her being an office-holder. She is a horrendous off-the-cuff speaker; she is good a delivering speeches. This torpedoes the “Maybe Fox gave her a job” conjecture: Palin would be a terrific anchor, but a horrible chat show hostess. And any network exec could see that.

The scandal hypothesis seems to fit best. But like some others, I have to wonder who resigns before the scandal surfaces? This is a major preemptive strike.

Palin has never seemed to be a woman of particularly shrewd political instincts. She achieved her greatest successes by aping the Limbaugh-Coulter playbook when that style of politics was at its apogee. I don’t think she has the political ability to retool her franchise now that that style is in decline. Plus, she’s nuckin’ futs too, as the kids say. So, the combination of “not knowing what’s she doing” and “kooky beliefs” might have produced this particular surreal political moment.

This is just the break that the McCain campaign needs.

The theory that she’s gonna rake in as much cash as she can before her 15 minutes are up is my guess. By the time her term ends she might be lucky to get an appearance on 'MILFs Gone Wild: Alaska!".

Welcome to the jungle, toots. Poor hit upon baby cannot handle it. Fuck sakes - you really couldn’t make it up. Top tip: don’t hire morons with - pasts - to be VP candidate.
