Palm OS or Pocket PC?

Just a correction to DDG’s first post - not all Sony Clies cost that much. I bought my model, the PEG-SJ30, for $250 last month. 16 MB RAM, color screen, the usual Palm OS apps, plus it came with Documents to Go 4 (allows you to read and edit MS-Word/Excel docs on your PDA) and Rand McNally’s StreetFinder application with one free map (I chose Chicago, of course). I’m not sure if Sony ships all of them that way, or if it was a special package for the store I bought it from, which was Best Buy.

Just one Palm app recommendation - Handy Shopper. I use this all the time and it’s freeware. Just too useful for someone like me, who can never remember what to get at the grocery store, what videos I’d wanted to rent, books I’d wanted to buy, etc. It has a lot of flexibility in making lists for most any topic.

SuperNelson, thanks for the sites, I’ll check them out.

Tiburon, do you know if that little keyboard screen is a part of PalmOS, and hence on all PalmOS handhelds? Or is it something particular to your handheld? Sorry for all these questions…

No problem, Revtim.

On my past Palms and on my current Pocket PC, you could choose the option of a little keyboard picture popping up - and could enter text by tapping on the keys. I believe this feature is standard on every handheld out there.

Both Palm and PPC sell little fold out keyboards that are, if I am correct, full size or close to full size keyboards.

Tibs.

I forgot to add that I don’t want to carry around a foldable keyboard. I know they’re small, but I just don’t liek the idea of carrying more than one item.

I have a Sony CLIE PEG-N710C and love it. It is fast, easy and powerful. It can play MP3’s, works with a memory card, and with the right software, it can do almost anything that the PowerPC units can do.

I would recommend any of the Sony CLIE series.

I was thinking of getting one of these. Just one question: can I use it to pick up my email and look at websites?

The extended Palm family of products not only works extremely well for its target applications, but it has the not inconsiderable advantage of having nothing to do with MicroSoft.

Can any handheld automatically synch documents? For example, suppose I have a Word doc on both my PC and the handheld. In addition to synching my calendar and contacts, can it automatically detect which has the latest version of the Word doc and copy the newer over the older version?

Yes. My Sony Clie came with a program called Documents to Go that does just that. It also game with programs that read and write MS Excel and Word files.

Thanks aoty. I notice a lot of Palm-running handhelds like the Sony Clie come with “Documents To Go” STANDARD EDITION. Anybody know if the auto document synching is included with the Standard Edition? I see differences between the versions here:
http://www.dataviz.com/products/documentstogo/dxtg_std.html
but it just seems to mention doc type support.

Is it true that the Standard edition included the document synching I described earlier? Not just supporting the editing of them, but the automatic synching.
