Panda Cam! Live Baby Panda

We get that sometimes, too. That may be like when she’s gone out to the eclosure where they’re teaching her to climb trees and such. Judging by how she’s climbing up the bars now, they’re teaching her well.

They just weighed her today, and she’s healthy 16 kilograms (35.2 pounds).

Thanks! But ours is in color, too. (It’s just that pandas are black and white. :D)

I can’t get that one to work.

Ah, now it works. I needed some sort of software from Microsoft.

There’s something quite soothing about watching this. As I type Mummy Panda (I assume) is lying legs akimbo with her tits out, and the little one is asleep next to her. Aaaaw.

I wonder how the dogs from PuppyCam are getting on.

Yes, that’s the mother, Lin Hui. As far as I know, the baby, Lin Ping, has only met the father, Chuang Chuang (or Xuang Xuang) once at about age 2 or 3 months, and reportedly growled at him.

The wife and I finally got around to looking at other parts of the panda-cam website and discovered there is a series of videos here of the baby, Lin Ping, in her early days and months. (The photos with the links don’t seem to match the video content, though.)

This one is especially interesting: Her birth! On May 27. It’s a bit dark, but while you can’t actually see the baby pop out, you certainly know she does. Because at about 37 seconds into the video, this little rat-looking creature suddenly appears, squealing like a stuck pig and flopping around. She must be wondering just where the hell she is. Mama takes care of her quickly, though. Hard to believe this was less than 7 months ago. She’s grown quickly.

I have done too much squealing today. She was so tiny, like a little naked mole rat!

Just a little update. Lin Ping turned 7 months old this past Sunday, December 27. They held a little birthday party for her outside in the compound they’ve been letting her run around in. I wish I could link to some photos, but I’ve only seen them in the newspaper. Very cute among all of her toys.

On that day, she climbed a 10-meter-tall pole for the first time. They’ve been teaching her to climb. Later in the week, they said Mama had to go up and get her down, as she climbed up and didn’t want to come down. Wish I could have seen how Mama accomplished that. Seems she’s really drawing in the crowds whenever she appears.

You may have seen Mama dragging baby around with her teeth. They’ve checked Lin Ping over, and there’s been no damage done from Mama’s teeth. amazing how gentle they can be when they carry the kids like that.

It was in the news that some rich Thai grandmother offered the zoo 5 million baht (US$150,000) just to let her two grandchildren in to play and touch Lin Ping for a short period. No word about whether the zoo took her up on the offer, but there’s been a public outcry against that sort of thing.

For unknown reasons, the Panda Cam has stopped working here at home but does work on other computers I try. In case anyone else is experiencing a similar blackout, there is an alternative: the True Life webcam.

It’s run by True Corp, a major sponsor of Lin Ping, the baby. (You can see their logo on the side of her slide.) The advertising junk around the screen can be annoying, although the wife says she does not see that when she views from her office. Perhaps we have it here at home because we get our broadband from True?

On the plus side, it shows a lot more than the regular Panda Cam, such as the outside enclosure, so you can watch her play there. Plus they run daily highlights and other stuff.

Lin Ping turned 9 months on Saturday, and they had a big party for her, same as every month. She’s getting BIG now, about 26 kilograms. It showed a caretaker carrying her, and man, she’s getting noticeably bigger. Still a cute little bundle, though. She seems especially fond of performing somersaults.

I would, except there does not seem to be any live feed …and unfortunately I don’t read thai =( is it down for maintenance or something?

The cam I originally linked to stopped working here at home but still works elsewhere. There’s this newer one I listed today, but they seem to have stopped for the moment. The last I looked, she was just flopped out sleeping, so maybe that’s why. It’s usually up, though.

In fact, this True Life cam is what people who subscribe to cable TV here see on one channel 24 hours.

Ah, now something seems to be happening on it.

And in other panda news, a hungry wild panda in China broke into a villager’s pig pen to chew on bones last week.

I’m not a Facebook user myself, but Lin Ping has her own page here.

Turned 11 months old on Tuesday. Received gifts of toys and fruit, and everyone sang “Happy Birthday” to her. I’m sure something special must be planned for her first birthday next month. A healthy, happy little girl. And getting quite plump.

Thursday marked the first birthday of Lin Ping. A story about her birthday party is here.

And again, you can see her birth a year ago here. And a live feed of her here. She’s gotten big! I’ve heard she still tries to feed off of Mama, but her teeth are sharper, so Mama’s pushing her away more.
